  Notes	(1) Davis, Virginia Lee Hutcheson, Tidewater Virginia Families, Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1989, p. 227: Mary Chiles was listed only the one year, 1720, in the processioning returns. It is known that she married a Mr. Howle. He was apparently not a land owner in St. Paul's Parish at that time, for the name Howle (or any variant spelling) has not been found in the vestry book. While there were Howles in New Kent County and in St. Peter's Parish, the husband of Mary Chiles has not been identified. Thomas Partridge and Company in Hanover County kept careful accounts (1734-1756), and he recorded the accounts of Mr. Robert Howle: "1738, 1 fine Hatt No. 8, 1 pr. mens shoes, 1 pr. shoe buckles; June 22, pd. Malachi Chiles, 1 hatt no. 6; Aug. 14, items dd Malachi Chiles." Robert Howle may have been [Mary's wife and] Malachi's stepfather.
