Terr. with my parents, John S. and Nancy DeBell, and two brothers in Sept. of 1907. My parents were married Oct. 29, 1889; he was from near Savannah and she was born in Taylor Co., Ky. I was the oldest child, Edna Lee DeBell, born Nov. 19, 1890; John Harvey, June 13, 1892; Joseph P. in 1894. The reason we came to O.T. was that my Uncle Million (sp?) Skaggs had made the Cherokee Strip "run" in 1893. He settled on a claim southeast of Nash. He had lived in Kans. before the run and accumulated some money. He would buy calves from the settlers from time to time, ship a carload to Kansas City and come to visit. Uncle Million (sp?) met us at Pond Creek, O.T. A few days later he drove us around to look at different farms for sale. As prohibition was voted in that year, an old Civil War veteran, Captain Mock, wanted to sell, so he could move to Kans. where he could get his liquor. He owned a farm 2 miles south of Coldwater, (later named Hillsdale). We liked the farm very much and my parents bought it. Father had received $58 an acre for our farm in Mo. and he paid $20 an acre for this 160 acre farm. That left him money to buy machinery, 4 horses and a wagon, a spring wagon and a topless one-seated buggy. There wasn't much entertainment in the winter time, a few dances now and then. The youngsters of the neighborhood, Berry family, Hale and my brothers and I would drive over to the school house 8 miles east to "literary". Our neighbors east of us, Frank Hale and daughter Flossie, came to visit us and when I returned her call, I met Don Hale. Going to "literary" together, we fell in love and July 27, 1909, were married. Our first children were twins, born Dec. 27, 1910. Irene and John Franklin. John just lived 6 hours. My mother and mother Hale lined a box my brother and Don made and took the baby and buried him in my parents' garden 4 miles north of Carrier. In 1929 we had another set of twins. Evelyn Irene Hale married and she and her husband have three children. Our next child was Harry Richard who just lived 11 months. Elfa Mae was born Dec. 10, 1913. She and her husband adopted a son, Robert. Virgie, our next daughter, has one girl. Joseph Cecil, born July 17, 1918; our eldest son has three children. He is an oil worker, Joe served in Germany in World War II. Don Marchant, April 14, 1920, had no children. He died at age 26. He was in the Philippines. During the war he contracted parasites. His death broke our hearts. His wife brought him home to bury. We were thankful for that. Billy Lee was born April 18, 1922. Bill was in England during World War II. The twins Dick Lawrence and Bobby Wayne were born in 1929. Dick works in oil production. Dick has three girls and a boy. Bobby Wayne is a steel worker. Bob has two girls. Lois, born Nov. 3, 1925, has two boys and a girl. I have 19 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren. In the depression Don's brother-in-law who lived at Bison, Okla., bought a 1000 egg incubator. However, he was unable to run it and his wife couldn't run it alone, as every time he went into the basement room where it was, he would get an asthma attack. He wanted my husband to come and run it for him. That sure helped us out as Don could have half what he made. Don made $300 a month. That year the great dust storms were especially bad. We would go to bed at night and next morning the house would be covered with dust. Lots of places it drifted as high as the fence post. Don ran the hatchery for 3 years, 1933, 1934, and 1935. One year we had the smallpox. Don was working on sewer line and people began getting smallpox so we went to Enid to get vaccinated. Don had already been exposed, however, didn't know it until he began breaking out. He asked the Doctor if he should quit work. Dr. said no use as he was outdoors. Evelyn was in high school so they made her stay out of school. I had been vaccinated 32 years before and never took. All the children had them except Billy. Virgie just had the fever and red eyes, did not break out. After we fumigated, Billy broke out; talk about plague, you couldn't touch him without hitting a big blister. His mouth bled and the other children wanted him to stay in his room until he was over them. In the depression people were losing their farms and Guthrie bank owned the farm we lived on. They wanted us to buy it and said they would let the year's installment apply on the principal. We had a large family and no money. However, we bought it and still owed $3500 when we sold it in 1933, and bought a home in Covington on E. Monroe St. (2) Enid Morning News, November 26, 1980, p. A-6: Mrs. Hale Celebrates 90th year at Dinner Mrs. D.E. Hale, 818 W. Nagel, celebrated her 90th birthday Sunday at the Hendrie House with members of her family. Her eight children and their spouses present were Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Hale, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hale, Charles and Elfa Lang, Ray and Evelyn Frederick, all of Enid; Mr. and Mrs. Bob Hale, Sand Springs, Mr. and Mrs. Dick[ey] Hale, Pampa, Texas, Mrs. Lois Norris, Odessa, Texas, and Mrs. Vergie Brown, formerly of the Philippines, now staying with her mother. Others present were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren from Oklahoma, California, Tennessee and Missouri. (3) Enid Morning News, November 18, 1984, p. F-7: Edna Hale to Mark 94th Year Edna Hale will celebrate her 94th birthday from 2 to 4 p.m. today at the Greenbrier Nursing Home, 1121 E. Garriott. Family and friends are invited to visit with her in the library at the nursing home. She requests no gifts, please. She was born Nov. 19, 1890, in Nodaway County, Mo. She moved with her parents and two brothers to Oklahoma in September 1894. They lived in the Carrier-Hillsdale farm community. Edna and Don E. Hale were married July 7, 1908, in Enid. In 1911 they moved near Marshall, where they farmed for many years. They moved to Covington upon retiring from farming. Eight of her 11 children are still living. They are Dick[ey] of Pampa, Texas, Bill of Gainesville, Texas, Bob of Sand Springs, Lois Norris of Odessa, Texas, and Evelyn Frederick, Elfa Lang, Virgie [sic, should be Vergie] Brown and Joe, all of Enid. She also has 18 grandchildren and 30 great- and great-great grandchildren. (4) Enid Daily Eagle, June 17, 1985, p. B-4: EDNA L. HALE Services for Edna L. Hale, 94, who died early Sunday morning in a local nursing home following a period of ill health, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home chapel. The Rev. Hugh Holland will officiate. Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery at Marshall. Hale was born Nov. 19, 1890, in Nodaway County, Mo., to John and Nancy DeBell. She married Don E. Hale on July 27, 1909. They lived most of their life on a farm northeast of Marshall, moving to Covington in 1958. She was a member of Willow Road Christian Church. She was preceded in death by two brothers; a son, Don, Jr.; two infant sons, Harry and John; one granddaughter and a grandson. Survivors include four sons, J.C. Hale, Enid, Bill, Gain[e]sville, Texas, Bob W., Sand Springs, and Dick[ey], Pampa, Texas; four daughters, Mrs. Charles (Elfa) Lang, Enid, Vergie Brown, Enid, Mrs. Ray (Evelyn) Frederick, Enid, and Mrs. Lois Norris, Odessa, Texas; 21 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Willow Road Christian Church, with the funeral home and the church in charge of the funds.
