Transcript of a letter dated June 28, 1887 from Benjamin French to his nephew, Joseph Wesley French, son of Jacob French.:

West Chester, Pennsylvania. June 28, 1887

My most beloved Nephew. Yours of the 23 / inst. to hand by am. Mail of 25, inst, and after a careful reading thereof, all of which was very gradifying do my good wife, excellent daughter, and myself I proceed to give you my Ancestors as I understand them and their nativity.

My Grand Parents on my Mother's side were Natives of Long Island, New York State. Their parents were English and Holland. Grand Father (Benjamin Morris) married while a citizen of Long Island. He removed to Morris county, New Jersey as early as 1740 - 1750, and settled at what now is Morristown, the County Seat of Morris County.

At the breaking out of the Revolution he owned a large farm which then took in what is now the County Seat. He and his whole household were Tories, and it was nip and tuck with them to void being detected. As matters waxed warmer and warmer, by Tories being caught and hung, he became alarmed, sold his farm and equipment for $48,000, was paid in Continental money, and as a seal of his hypercritical Loyalty to the Colonies, he entered the Continental Army as a Teamster. Baggered by his actions, and I presume, shamed and scorned by Loyal neighbors, he removed to Lycoming county, Pennsylvania. and settled upon ten acres of land, paying therfor $100.00. Upon his purchase he erected a house which, while standing, was within 300 yards of the spot where you first saw the light of day.

On my mother's side I had four Aunts and four Uncles. . . .

My Grand Father Morris, and my father, settled, each at same time upon adjoining lands in Lycoming, Pennsylvania. . . . I am not sure of the year in which the two families settled in Lycoming, but believe it to have been about 1800. My Uncle Dennis Morris settled near the Painted Post, alias 4 corners, alis Block House, Pennsylvania. . . . Uncles Hesekiah, Samuel and David Morris settled in Lycoming, Pennsylvania. Aunt Sarah, remained in N.J. Aunt Gerusha, settled in Ohio. Aunts Elizabeth and Jemima, settled in Lycoming.

      All Morris, are fleshy. . . .

      (2) Analysis by compiler of Benjamin FRENCH's letter dated June 28, 1887, as viewed in the light of information from other sources:

Benjamin MORRIS [per IGI, born about 1734; per Benjamin FRENCH's letter, born in Long Island, NY] + Mrs. Benjamin MORRIS [per IGI, born about 1738; per Benjamin FRENCH's letter, born in Long Island, NY]; per IGI, Benjamin MORRIS and Mrs. Benjamin MORRIS were married about 1759, probably in Long Island City, Queens County, NY. The children of Benjamin MORRIS and Mrs. Benjamin MORRIS were:

      1. Dennis MORRIS [per IGI, male, born about 1760, probably in Long Island City, Queens County, NY]

      2. Hezekiah MORRIS [per IGI, female (but actually a male), born about 1762, probably in Long Island City, Queens County, NY]

      3. Samuel MORRIS [per IGI, male, born about 1764, probably in Long Island City, Queens County, NY]

      4. David MORRIS [per IGI, male, born about 1766, probably in Long Island City, Queens County, NY]

      5. Sarah MORRIS [per IGI, female, born about 1768, probably in Long Island City, Queens County, NY]

      6. Jerusha MORRIS [per IGI, female, born about 1770, probably in Long Island City, Queens County, NY]

      7. Elizabeth MORRIS [per IGI, female, born about 1772, probably in Long Island City, Queens County, NY]

      8. Martha MORRIS [per IGI, female, born about 1776, probably in Morris County, NJ; died March 15, 1849; per Pedigree Resource File, married John Congleton FRENCH about 1792, probably in Morris County, NJ (but according to the couple's marriage record, actually married December 13, 1798 in Sussex County, NJ]

      9. Jemima MORRIS [per IGI, female, born about 1774 (but according to the 1850 census, born about 1784), probably in Long Island City, Queens County, NY (but probably actually born in Morris County, NJ; per Pedigree Resource File, married Abraham CORSON, who (1) was a son of Peter COURSEN and Hannah DUTTER; (2) was born about 1779 in NJ; (3) died on July 2, 1851 in Penn Township, Lycoming County, PA; (4) was buried at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Montoursville, Lycoming County, PA]

      Notes by compiler:

      Per Benjamin FRENCH's letter:

      1. The parents of Benjamin MORRIS and Mrs. Benjamin MORRIS were English and Dutch. It is not clear which parents were English, and which parents were Dutch.

      2. Benjamin MORRIS married while he was a citizen of Long Island, NY.

      3. Benjamin MORRIS had nine children [four males + five females (including Martha MORRIS)].

      4. Benjamin MORRIS moved to what is now Morristown, Morris County, NJ as early as 1740-1750. [If the IGI is correct about the place of Benjamin MORRIS' death, and about the place of birth of most of his children, then he probably actually moved to Morris County sometime between 1772 and 1776.]

      5. Benjamin MORRIS was originally a Tory, but later joined the Continental Army as a teamster.

      6. Benjamin MORRIS moved to Lycoming County, PA about 1800.

      7. Dennis MORRIS settled near the Painted Post, alias 4 corners, alias Block House, PA. [The only town with a name like any of these names which the compiler has found is Four Corners, Elk County, PA.]

      8. Hezekiah, Samuel and David MORRIS settled in Lycoming County, PA.

      9. Sarah MORRIS stayed in NJ.

      10. Jerusha MORRIS settled in OH.

      11. Elizabeth and Jemima MORRIS settled in Lycoming County, PA.

      12. All MORRISes are "fleshy."

      (3) Sussex County, NJ was created from Morris County, NJ in 1753. A Benjamin MORRIS lived in Sussex County as of 1774, according to the following tax list:
