As far as I know, the notion that John L. Lindsey's wife was Rebecca Anderson came from William Lindsey McDonald. In his book, The Legacy of Our Lindsey's, McDonald stated that Rebecca Anderson was from Newberry County, South Carolina, and that she was a niece to Elizabeth Ford, who had married Samuel Lindsey in Newberry County. And William Lindsey [McDonald] believed that Samuel Lindsey and Elizabeth Ford were the parents of John L. Lindsey.

Research has shown that Mr. McDonald was mistaken in his belief that John L. Lindsey was a son of Samuel and Elizabeth Ford Lindsey. Samuel and Elizabeth did have a son named John, but that John Lindsey never left Newberry County, and he married a first cousin, Elizabeth Lindsey.

Because John L. Lindsey never set foot in Newberry County, it is unlikely that he married a girl in Newberry County.

Until someone can produce a marriage record or a will that can state conclusively the identity of John L. Lindsey's wife, the safest route is to list her as unknown.
