GEORGE MASON, married Phillis Hobson. . . .

Captain George Mason (Colonel Lemuel, Lieutenant Francis), was Justice of Norfolk in 1702; Captain of Militia in 1707. His will was dated 13 January, 1710, and recorded in Portsmouth, Virginia, in Book 9, p. 13, as 16 March, 1711. After the usual formalities, he bequeaths to his wife, Phillis; devises to his son, Thomas Mason, the plantation whereon he (the father) lives, designating same to become the property of his son Thomas when he attains maturity. To his son George, the plantation known as "Marriner Jones". His wife Phillis is directed to give title for these properties to his named sons, within three months after his decease. To his daughter Abigail, certain personal items, negroes, etc.; to his daughter Frances, much the same, specifying such are to become their property when they attain the age of 16, or upon marriage. His wife was Phillis Hobson, a daughter of Peter Hobson, as is shown by a deed, in Book 9, page 13, Portsmouth, Virginia, 16 February, 1711; Phillis Mason, widow and relict of George Mason, deceased, made a deed for love and affection to her son Thomas Mason, of certain houses, lands, orchards and gardens, inherited by her from her father, Peter Hobson, which he had bought from Smith, also ½ of the Plantation called "Marriner Jones". The other half was to go to her son George Mason, but Thomas was to have first choice. Ibid. Book 9, p. 89, shows Phillis Mason to have filed a motion, 21 September, 1711. At the time his will was made, the children of George Mason were all under age.

Children of Captain George and Phillis (Hobson) Mason, four:

      i. FRANCES MASON, who was bequeathed certain items by her father's will, married John Phripp, born 1683; died 1776; a large land owner in the borough of Norfolk. Part of his estate is what was known as Commercial Place, which he gave to the City for a public market. For more than a century it was so used, and known as Market Square. He was elected Mayor of Norfolk, November 14, 1745; served 19 months; re-elected June, 1757; was warden of St. Paul's Church in 1749. . . .

ii. GEORGE MASON, is mentioned in connection with members of his family, in deeds and land transactions.

iii. ABIGAILE MASON, mentioned in her father's will; married John Elligood, of Norfolk; who purchased much property from his brother-in-law, Thomas Mason and his wife Mary (Newton) Mason.

iv. THOMAS MASON, married twice; married, first, Mary Newton; married, second, Elizabeth, surname unknown. [Note by compiler: The compiler believes that this Thomas MASON was married only once, to Mary NEWTON, and that the author has confused this Thomas MASON with the Thomas MASON/MEASON who married Elizabeth TEETH.]
