5. REBECCA COPELAND (James) was born about 1807 in Newberry District, South Carolina. She died before August, 1866, in Williamson County, Tennessee, as a court record was filed by her brother, Samuel M. Copeland, on this date showing that she was deceased. On 8 June, 1828, a marriage bond was obtained by John P. Still to marry Rebecca Copeland in Williamson County. John P. Still was born in Virginia and was considerably older than Rebecca Copeland, indicating that she may have been a second wife. There were some unidentified Stills living in Williamson County during the time that John and Rebecca Still lived there, and they may have been from a previous marriage.
John P. Still may have been the brother of Josiah Still who died in Williamson County, Tennessee, in 1830. Their children had similar given names, and the two families lived near each other. Josiah Still did not name his children in his will, but they were named in a division of his estate in November, 1840. His children, as named in the division of his estate, were John P. Still, Thomas W. Still, James H. Still, Louisa Jenkins (the wife of Duke Jenkins), Lucy Ann Still, Mary Jane McMurray (the wife of John McMurray), and Elizabeth K. Still. The two daughters, Lucy Ann and Elizabeth K., married after the division of their father's estate. Lucy Ann married Allen J. Mason, and Elizabeth K. married George W. Kidd.
The 1840 census for Williamson County shows several young children living with John and Rebecca Still who cannot be identified, according to age, as their children. They may have had some children, other than their oldest child, who died young. However, it is possible that these children may have been the orphaned children of Rebecca's sisters, Cynthia Hopkins and Sally Davis.
Rebecca's husband, John P. Still, died in 1858, according to several court records. His estate appears to have not been settled, however, until the August Term, 1865, Williamson County, Tennessee. Rebecca Still probably died before this date, as the estate was divided among the children. The oldest son, William P. Still was the administrator of the estate of John P. Still.
CHILDREN OF JOHN P. AND REBECCA (COPELAND) STILL:
i. Mary Elizabeth Still was born about 1829 and died in December, 1832, at the age of three. She is buried in the Still family cemetery on the Ben Rader farm on Concord Road in Williamson County.
14. ii. Williams P. Still was born about 1832.
15. iii. Samuel J. Still was born about 1834.
16. iv. John P. Still was born about 1836.
v. Louisa Jane Still was born about 1839 and was married to J. J. Reed.
17. vi. Virginia W. Still was born about 1841.
vii. Thomas W. Still was born 13 March, 1844, and obtained a bond to marry Virginia Ellis on 28 February, 1867, in Williamson County. They had no children. The tombstone inscription for Thomas W. Still, as given in the book, WIlliamson 101, shows his date of death as 10 March, 1874. However, he is shown on the 1880 Williamson County, Tennessee, census as then being age 35, with wife, V. W. Still, age 33. The tombstone date is probably not correct or may not be legible. Thomas W. and Virginia Still are buried in the Still family cemetery on the Ben Rader farm on Concord Road. They and the little girl, Mary Elizabeth Still, sister of Thomas. W. Still, who died at age three, are the only Stills with markers in this cemetery. Virginia (Ellis) Still married W. K. Burkett after the death of Thomas W. Still. She died 25 January, 1914, at the age of 67. It is possible that John P. and Rebecca Still, parents of Thomas W. Still, may be buried in this cemetery, but they have no markers. There are two other Still family cemeteries in this area, one being that of the family of Josiah Still, and the other being the cemetery of a Still family with no legible markers.
18. viii. Anna Still was born about 1848.
The children of John P. Still and wife, Rebecca Copeland, were probably born in Williamson County, Tennessee.
