Paul Fitzsimmons
Former engineer, attorney
Paul Fitzsimmons, a former engineer for Chrysler Corp. and American Motors and an attorney, died Thursday of cancer at his Bass River, Mass., home. He was 59.
A native of Medford, Mass., and the son of a minister emeritus, Mr. Fitzsimmons lived in Michigan from 1959 to 1986. He first taught high school chemistry in Olivet, then worked for the automotive companies before opening a law practice in Rochester after obtaining a law degree from Wayne State University. He lived in Rochester for the majority of his time in Michigan.
While at American Motors and Chrysler, he helped develop exhaust emissions testing standards, said his wife of 18 years, Christine Fitzsimmons. He was also an associate professor at Lawrence Institute of Technology in Detroit.
In 1985, Mr. Fitzsimmons moved to Bass River and opened a general law practice. He was vice commodore at the Bass River Yacht Club.
Other survivors include sons Mark and Matthew Fitzsimmons; a daughter, Karen Fitzsimmons; a brother; a sister; and his mother, Maizie Fitzsimmons.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. today at Pilgrim Congregational Church in Harwich Port, Mass.
