AARON VAN CLEAVE was the first to spell his name Cleave, English for Cleef. He was born about 1710 on Staten Island, later moving to New Jersey with his parents where he married Rachel Schenck about 1734. She was born about 1709, he died in 1780 and both are buried in North Carolina at the forks of the Yadkin river, where they moved with their seven sons and one daughter about 1750.

Aaron was at one time a Captain of a sea going vessel in the coast-wise trade and many clippings are found in the Boston Weekly News and New York Weekly Post-Boy.

Rachel Schenck was born about 1709, the daughter of Jan Roelofse Schenck who was born 1670 and died in 1753, and Sarah Konwenhoven, born 1674 and died in 1761.

Children of Aaron and Rachel Schenck Van Cleave are:

[i] Samuel Van Cleave, b. about 1735, moved to Va.

[ii] Cary Van Cleave, moved to Ohio in later years.

[iii] John Van Cleave, b. 1739. m. 1st. Mary Shepherd, [2nd] Rachel Ryker.

      [iv] Benjamin Van Cleave, b. 1741. m. Ruth Monson in N. C.

AARON VAN CLEVE, son of Isbrandt . . . , was born probably on Staten Island where the family then lived. He was with his brother Benjamin a freeholder in New Brunswick in 1748 & 1750 where they were in business together. He is said to have gone on a bond for a friend for which he had to pay, and because of this loss moved to Rowan County in North Carolina in May 1750. He participated in the Mecklenburg Convention and its declaration of 20 May 1775 and is said to have bought a farm from Daniel Boone when the latter went to Kentucky. He was probably the Aaron listed in the Boston Weekly New letters 1743-44 as sailing between Boston and Perth Amboy. He died in 1780 and is buried at Joppa Cemetery, Salisbury, N.C. He had m. in 1734 Rachael, dau. of Jan Roelofse & Sarah (Couwenhoven) SCHENCK, who is buried with him, and had:

[i] SAMUEL, b. about 1735, moved to Virginia and not traced further here.

      * per Richard Clarke (48168697): Born: Nieuw Utrecht, Flatlands (Flatbush), Breukelen (Brooklyn), Kings County, New York

Aaron VanCleef/VanCleave was born on Staten Island about 1710, the son of Isbrandt and Jannetje (Van der Bilt) VanCleef, but grew up in the family home later established in Middleton, Monmouth County, New Jersey. He seems to have been the first member of the clan to spell his name Van Cleave or Vancleave, spellings that have been carried by his descendants to present (1983) generations. Aaron's brothers John and Benjamin and their descendants have used the spelling VanCleve or Vancleve.

In 1734, Aaron married Rachel Schenck, who was born in 1709, daughter of Jan Roelofse Schenck, b. 1670 and d. 1753, and Sarah Couwenhover, b. 1674 and d. 1761. About the same time his brother Benjamin married Rachel Couwenhoven who was born in 1712, daughter of Cornelius Couwenhoven and Margaretta Schenck.

Aaron and his brother Benjamin settled in New Brunswick, New Jersey, where they were in business together from 1748 to 1750. Aaron moved his entire family from New Jersey to Rowan County, North Carolina, arriving there May 1, 1750. He settled in the forks of the Yadkin River and lived the rest of his life in that area, which later became Davie County in 1836.

According to a hand written deed, on February 21, 1764, Daniel and Rebeckah Boone transferred 640 acres of land to Aaron VanCleave. A translation of the agreement is recorded in the book "Ancestors and Descendant of Allan Bishop VanCleave and Dorothy Elenora (Yeo) Vancleave, by Allan B and Dorothy E VanCleave. This land, formerly known as Rowan County, is located in Davie County, Driving US 601 from Salisbury, NC to Mocksville, NC branch off onto US 64 until it crosses Bear Creek; the land in this area was owned by Squire Boone, transferred to Daniel Boone, then to Aaron Vancleave.

Aaron VanCleave died in 1780, age about 76. Rachel's death date is unknown but both are believed to be buried in the "Old Joppa" cemetery originally known as Burying Ground Ridge, which is just outside the town of Mocksville, NC and only about two miles from the home that they bought from Daniel Boone. Daniel Boone's parents, Squire and Rebeckah, are buried in the "Old Joppa" cemetery too. Almost all of the 18th century grave markers are completely disintegrated and it is hard to determine the exact location of the graves for Aaron and Rachel VanCleave.
