He was with his wife, Ruth, and most of his children at the moment of his death. He had for many years been suffering with congestive heart failure and macular degeneration and Death was very gentle to him at the end. Jack was born in Berkeley, CA in 1913, and attended local, Bay Area schools finally graduating from U.C. Berkeley in 1935. He joined the company his grandfather had started in 1895, E. K. Wood Lumber Co., which had its headquarters in San Francisco, timberlands and sawmills in Washington and Oregon and retail yards all along the West Coast. During Jack's tenure, finally as Vice President and CEO of the company, E. K. Wood Lumber Co. conducted business not only in the Western US, but also in South America and throughout the Pacific Basin. The company had interests in railroads and shipping and was one of the first prefabricators of buildings and homes in the country. Following WWII, a series of forest fire disasters and a change in the business forced the company into liquidation in 1958. Jack later became involved in the securities business as a partner in S. C. Pohlman Company, which was eventually merged with Stone & Youngberg of San Francisco. Jack retired in 1975. In 1937, Jack married Marian Singer with whom he had four children before she passed away in 1970. In 1972, Jack married Ruth Runner Eastwood and together they moved to and resided, until Jack's death, in both Pebble Beach and Carmel Valley. Jack was a current or former member of the International Club of Carmel, the Pacific-Union Club of San Francisco, and the Claremont Country Club of Oakland. In lieu of flowers, Jack's family requests donations be made to The Macular Degeneration Foundation, Inc., a tax exempt, non profit organization.
