ABRAHAM BROWN, b. about 1757, probably in N. C. He m. 18 Oct. 1784, Catherine Bonaker, dau of Michael and Mary Bonaker. Michael Bonaker's Will was dated 4 Feb. 1778, Rowan Cty, with Michael Brown as one of the executors. Abraham Brown may have m. someone else earlier, as the birth date of dau, Rosanna, according to all census records, precedes 1784, and the birth date of son, Jacob, on his tombstone gives 1783. Abraham and Catherine moved from Rowan Cty, N. C., where they were m., to Washington Cty, N. C. (now Tn.) about 1789. He bought 150 acres on the Little Limestone from his brother, George, 11 Aug. 1791. This remained their home for several years. On 9 Oct. 1835, Abraham sold 220 acres of land on the Little Limestone to his son, Stephen. Probably this same year he moved to Vermilion Cty, Ill., where some of his children were already living. Abraham's Will, dated 18 Jul. 1842, is recorded in Vermilion Cty. The executors of the Will made Bond on 23 Jul. 1842, after the death of Abraham. Probably Catherine d. before 1850, as her name does not appear in that census.
According to Beckwith's History of Vermilion Cty, Abraham was one of the early settlers in that Cty. Settling near him was an Abraham Brown, Jr., however, research has determined that this Abraham was not a son, but a nephew. The Will of Abraham gives the names of all of his children, including the oldest son, Jeremiah, who had d before his father.
Some of the descendants of Abraham and Catherine became residents of the area near or in Vermilion Cty, Ill. However, several of them remained in Washington Cty, Tn, and were still residents of Jonesboro and its vicinity in the 1870s. CHILDREN named in the Will:
[i] JEREMIAH BROWN, probably b. before 1782
[ii] ROSANNA BROWN, b. 1782
[iii] JACOB BROWN, b. 1783-1785
[iv] CATHERINE BROWN, m. Jacob Stearns, according to the Will. This may be the Jacob Starns of early Washington Cty, Tn.
[v] STEPHEN BROWN, b. ca. 1789
[vi] JOSEPH BROWN, b. ca. 1793
[vii] SARAH BROWN, b. 1794
[viii] WILLIAM BROWN, b. ca. 1797; still living in 1842
[ix] JAMES BROWN, b. ca. 1800
[x] ESTHER (HESTER) BROWN, b. ca. 1802
[xi] NELLY BROWN, b. ca. 1803; m. JOHN SMITH, according to her father's Will. She might have m. in 1820, Wash. Cty, George Fraker, and then in 1830, Wash. Cty, m. John Smith.
