- (1) Bennett, Archibald F., "The Smoot Family," Utah Genealogical and Historical Magazine, Vol. 25 (1934), pp. 14-15:
WILLIAM SMOOT, son of Richard Smoot and Elizabeth (? Rowland), was born about 1663, in Charles Co., Md. He was married by 9 Aug., 1684, for on that date he, with his wife Anne, deeded a "tract of land which was reserved by Capt. Randolph Brandt which appears by his certificate dated Sept. 26, 1683, lying on west side of Wicomico River, being part of a tract of land granted to William Smoote by Patten dated Nov. 1, 1671 and called 'Wicomico Fields.'" (Liber N. No. 1, Folio 213, Land Records of Charles Co.) A further deed is recorded under date of 24 Dec., 1692, from "William Smoot and Anne Smoote, his wife," to Humphrey Warren, of "a tract of land being part of a tract of land of 500 acres known as 'Wicomico Fields' being by estimation 200 acres." (Liber S. No. 10, Folio 10.)
He probably removed after this date to Westmoreland Co., Virginia. The will of William Smoot, Westmoreland Co., dated 12 Apr., 1706, proved 30 Apr., 1707, bequeaths to daughters SARAH and MARY SMOOT, tobacco and personal estate; to wife ELLENOR; sons WILLIAM and THOMAS; dau. WINNYFRUT. The sons were under age. (Westmoreland Co. Wills, pp. 41-42.) The following probably relate to descendants of this William Smoot: Will of William Smoot of Richmond Co., Va., proved in 1716; inventories of Thomas Smoot, 1751; Sarah Smoot, 1761; Charles Smoot, 1787; and the will of John Smoot, 1792, all of Northumberland Co., Va.; also the wills of Thomas Smoot, 1783, of Prince William Co., and William Smoot, of Richmond Co.
Children of William Smoot, by wife Anne or wife Ellenor
i. SARAH, unmarried in 1706.
ii. MARY, unmarried in 1706.
iii. WILLIAM, JR., under age in 1705; perhaps will proved in 1716.
iv. THOMAS, under age in 1706; his inventory was perhaps taken in 1751, in Northumberland Co., Va.
v. WINNIFRED, unmarried in 1706.
