    • (1) Fiske, William, Wyman, "Clarke and Stacy Origins of Three Immigrants to Ipswich, Massachusetts: Simon and Elizabeth (Clarke) Stacy and Her Sister, Susanna (Clarke) Whipple," in The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. 160 (January 2006), pp. 24-26:

WILLIAM CLARKE "Senior" of Theydon Garnon, was born say 1490, and died between 10 October 1551 (date of his will) and 10 December 1553 (when his will was proved). He married JOAN _____.

In 1532 William Archer and wife Rose quitclaimed to Thomas Roger and William Clerke, and to heirs of Thomas, property in Essex, for which the plaintiffs "granted the same to deforciants and the heirs of Rose to hold of the chief lords." The first record of William at Theydon Garnon was in 1537 [29 Henry VIII] when, at the court of Theydon Garnon, "came William Clark and acknowledges that he holds according to the custom of the mano[r] 3 crofts of bond land called Sparowhawks containing 14 acres, yearly rent 4s 4d." Essex Feet of Fines for 1539 shows that Richard Saltmarsh and wife Maud quitclaimed property in Theydon Gannon (one messuage, one ham, one cottage, two acres of meadow, three acres of pasture, and one acre of woodland) to William Clarke in consideration of forty marks. In 1542 Thomas Deering the younger quitclaimed twelve acres of land in Theydon Garnon to William Clarke and his heirs in consideration of ??30.

The will of William Clarke "the elder" of Theydon Garnon made 15 October 1551, proved 10 December 1553, provided as follows:

William's origin is unknown. It is of possible interest that his son John in his 1550 will (see below), in addition to leaving money to the poor of Theydon Garnon, made a similar bequest to Epping, where there was a large Clarke family.
