. . . John P. Phillips and Permelia STALLINGS, married January 20, 1810 in Logan Co, KY, thereafter making their home in Posey Co, IN. Permelia Stallings (c. 1792-1839) was the daughter of Wright Stallings (1760-1836) and Polly WESTRAY (c. 1765-1823) of Franklin Co, NC who moved to Chatham Co, NC in 1800 and settled next door to John P. Phillips. Polly's parents, Benjamin WESTRAY and his 2nd wife, Elizabeth SAWYER Westray, had moved from Franklin Co, NC to Chatham Co, NC about 1798, along with Elizabeth's son, John Sawyer. Benjamin Westray died in Chatham Co 1817 naming his daughter, Polly "Stallion" in his will.
Wright Stallings sold his land on Beaver Creek adj. John Phillips in December 1807 (John Sawyer witness), and John Phillips sold his land March 1808. Wright Stallings appeared on the Logan Co, KY tax list 1809, with Phillips & Stallings moving to Posey Co, IN 1810-1811.
Benjamin Westray's son, Simon, moved with Wright Stallings and John P. Phillips to Logan Co, KY and settled on Muddy Creek near John & Charity Bird, Willis Webb and Benjamin, John & William Simmons. Simon Westray died in Logan Co 1817, Wm. Simmons & Willis Webb appraisers.
The father of Wright Stallings was Moses Stallings, b. c. 1729 in Chowan Precinct of Upper Parrish, Nansemond Co, VA and died October 18, 1794 in Nash Co, NC, having migrated to Granville/Bute/Franklin County about 1767. Moses Stallings was the son of Elias & Susannah (DENBY?) Stallings of Bertie Co, NC. . . .
John P. Phillips (b. 1770-1774, d. aft 1840) was possibly the son of James Phillips of the 1790 Chatham Co, NC census near Isham Johnson, Blumer Wilson, John Tedder, Michael Wilson & Burwell Williams. John P. Phillips was most likely married 3 times, his 1st wife unknown, his 2nd wife probably Permelia's elder sister (per family lore), his 3rd wife being Permelia Stallings who attempted to divorce him in 1822. Permelia left her husband in 1829 and went with her married daughters to Clay Co, IL, taking her young children with her. The law was that if a woman left her husband's bed & board for 3 consecutive years, she could legally become a "femme sole" and be free to remarry. On August 3, 1833, Permelia Stallings married Thomas LEVITT and removed to Effingham Co, IL where she gave birth to Lorenzo Dow Levitt. John P. Phillips remained with his son James in Posey Co, IN.
