      The 7th day of the 6th month, 1683. The people of God being met together as usual. . . .

      After some consultation touching the disposal of The Widow Mason's children It was agreed that they should remain at the place of their present being, until the next meeting, and then be disposed of as friends should see convenient.

      At a Quarterly Meeting of friends in the City of Philadelphia, the 4th day of the 7th month 1683. The people of God being met together as usual.

      They begin to consult touching a fit way to dispose of Widow Mason's Children, which friends of the last monthly meeting had left to the consideration of friends of this present meeting. . . .

      Agreed that Robert Mason (. . . son of the said Widow Mason) do remain with Christian Closse, where at present he resides, till the next monthly meeting, and then to be further disposed of.

      The people of the Lord being met together the 2nd day of the 8th month 1683.

      They began to treat touching the disposal of Robert Mason, a son of Widow Mason, it being refer'd from the last meeting to this. Agreed and concluded that William Howell do make Enquiry for a suitable master, whom the said Robert Mason may serve as an apprentice, and that he discourse with Thomas Fairman and John Hart touching the same, and report his proceedings therein to the next meeting. [There was no such report at the next meeting.]

      DEED ROB'T MASON & UX. TO JNO. ASHMEAD.

      THIS INDENTURE made the fifteenth day of May, in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and thirty-one, Between Robert Mason, of Dublin, in the County of Philadelphia, Yeoman, and Jane, his Wife, of the one part, and John Ashmead, of Germantown, in the said County, Blacksmith, of the other part, WITNESSETH, that the said Robert Mason and Jane, his Wife, for the Consideration of ten pounds, lawful money to them paid by the said John Ashmead, the Receipt whereof they do hereby acknowledge, have granted, bargained, sold, released and Confirmed, and by these Presents do grant, bargain, sell, Release and Confirm unto the said John Ashmead in his actual seizin now being by Virtue of a Bargain and Sale unto him thereof made for the term of one year by Indenture by the said Robert Mason and Jane, his Wife, by Indenture bearing Date the day next before the day of the date hereof made between the same parties as these Presents and to his Heirs and Assigns the full and Just Quantity of Sixteen Acres of Liberty Land to be Surveyed and Located within the Limits of the Northern Liberties of the City or Philadelphia (it being part of or Appurtenant unto the full and just proportion or Quantity of One thousand Acres which the late Proprietary, William Penn, deceased, by the name of William Penn, of Worminghurst, in the County of Sussex, Esq'r, by one Indenture of Release of the fourth day of May, Anno Dom. one thousand six hundred and eighty-two, did grant unto John Matson [sic], father or the said Robert Mason, in fee, Vide Book A, Vol. the 1st, page 154. Also the said John Mason dying Intestate, Richard Mason, another of the sons of him, the said John Mason, by Indenture or the first day of February, Anno Dni. one thousand six hundred and ninety-six, did inter al'a Grant all his Right and Title in the Premises unto the said Robert Mason in ffee And Ann Mason, the Daughter of the said John Mason, by Indenture of the twenty-sixth day of February, Anno Dom. One thousand seven hundred, did int, al'a sell all her Right and Title in the Premises unto the said Robert Mason in fee, Together also with all and singular the Ways, Woods, Waters, Water Courses, Rights, Liberties, Privileges, Hereditaments and Appurtenances whatsoever unto the Liberry Land aforesaid hereby granted belonging and the Reversions and Remainders thereof, And all the Estate, Right, Title and Interest whatsoever of the said Robert Mason and Jane, his Wife, of, in and to the same premises and true Copies to be taken at the charge of the said John Ashmead, his Heirs or Assigns, of all Writings and Evidences ConcernIng the same, TO HAVE AND TO HOLD the said full and just Quantity of Sixteen Acres of Liberty Land, Hereditaments and Premises hereby granted, with the Appurtenances, unto the said John Ashmead and his Heirs, to the use and behoof of him, the said John Ashmead, his Heirs and Assigns, for ever, under Proportionable part of the Proprietary Quit rent in the said recited Indenture of Release mentioned, And the said Robert Mason doth Covenant for him and his Heirs that he and his Heirs the said Sixteen Acres of Liberty Land hereby granted or mentioned to be granted with the Appurtenances unto the said John Ashmead, his Heirs and Asigns, against him, the said Robert Mason and his Heirs and against the said Richard Mason and Ann Mason and their Heirs respectively and against the Heirs of the said John Mason, deceased, and against all other person and Persons lawfully claiming or to Claim by from or under them or any of them, shall and will Warrant and for ever Defend by these Presents, And the said Robert Mason, for himself, his Heirs, Executors and Administrators, doth Covenant, promise and Grant to and with the said John Ashmead, his Heirs and Assigns, by these Presents, that he, the said Robert Mason and his Heirs, and the said Richard Mason and Ann Mason and their Heirs respectively and the Heirs of the said John Mason, deceased, and all other Person and Persons whatsoever having or lawfully claiming or that shall or may at any time or times hereafter so have or Claim any Estate, Right, Title or Interest of, in or to the Premises or any part or parcell thereof, by, from or under him, them or any of them, shall and will at any time or times hereafter upon the reasonable Request, Cost and Charges in Law of the said John Ashmead, his Heirs or Assigns, make, execute and acknowledge or cause so to be, all and every such further and other reasonable Act and Acts, Deed or Deeds, Device or Devices in Law whatsoever for the further and better Assurance and Confirmation of the said full and just Quantity of sixteen Acres of Liberty Land, Hereditaments and Premises hereby granted or mentioned to be granted, with the Appurtenances, unto the said John Ashmead, his Heirs and Assigns, as by him or them or by his or their Council learned in the Law shall be reasonably Devised, Advised or required.

      The Second day of December, 1766, Before me, John Bull, Esq'r, One of the Justices of the Peace, &ca., Came Charles Brockden, Esq'r, Master of the Rolls of the Province of Pennsylvania and Recorder of Deeds for the City and County of Philadelphia, and upon his Solemn Affirmation, according to Law did declare and say that he was personally present and did see the within named Robert Mason and Jane, his Wife, Seal and as their Act and Deed deliver the within Written Indenture, and that the name C. Brockden thereunto subscribed as a Witness of such Sealing and Delivery is of his, this Affirmants own proper Hand Writing.

      IN WITNESS whereof, I have hereunto set my Hand and Seal the day and year abovesaid.

      [Note by compiler: Since John MASON, Sr. died intestate, and the only heirs of his mentioned in this deed are his children, Robert MASON, Richard MASON, and Ann MASON, the compiler assumes that John MASON, Jr. (the other child of John MASON, Sr.) predeceased the execution of this deed on 15 May 1731.]

      The Late Prop'r, by Lease and Rel., dated the 3 and 4th 3 mo., 1682, Granted to John Mason 1,000 Acres of Land in this Province, which has been already laid out, but Rob't Mason, surviving son of the said John Mason, finding the Lib. Land belonging to the said Purchase not yet taken up, by Deed dated 15th 5 mo. last past, granted the same to John Ashmeade, who desires a warr't to take up the same.
