(2) Ferris, Mary Walton, Dawes-Gates Ancestral Lines, Vol. 1, Milwaukee, WI: privately printed, 1943, pp. 559:
[A]fter twenty years of widowhood the possessions of ELIZABETH show many comforts and even luxuries. Late in 1669 she was very ill - perhaps suddenly so, for she dictated a will in the presence of three of her children. It appears to have been written out but it failed of her signature; so the three children took oath as to what their mother's stated wish had been as follows:
"The words of ELIZABETH STACE apon her death beade her Laste will: hauing & Inioying here vnderstanding and memory is as followeth. first I giue my Soule Into the hands of Jesus Christ my blesed Redemer: & my body to be desently Buried in Ipswich Burying place: & for my outward Estate first I giue to my Sonne Simon a bolloke for the buryall of me to my Sonne thomas Stace a gratte bibell & a damaske napkaine: to my dafter Sarah busswell a vellvette cushen. to my dafter Susanah ffrench two Payer of glowes: all thesse hauing Resayved ther porshones before: Item I giue to my dafter MEORS a beade & a blanket & a Couerlide and bollstor & a pillow & a payer of Sheatts & a payer of pillowbears & one of my wearing Coouttes [coats?]: & to my dafter ane in Considerashon of here staiying with me In my owld aegge & beinge hellpfull to me; for that I giue to here two Cowes and all my other howsalld stufe: MARY MEORS having Resayved a porshon allso befor."
"This we testify to be the Last wille of ELIZABEATH STACE widdowe of Ipswicth of the County of Esex as we Resayved them from here owne mouth a day or two befor she dyed.
"Witness: Simon Stace, Sarath Stace, Anne Stace."
Their testimony was accepted by the court on November 11, 1669, when "Symon Stace, her son" was appointed administrator of her estate and ordered to bring in an inventory. This listing made by John Whipple and Thomas Clerke (Clark) showed two beds with plentiful bedding, a silver spoon, two chests and a trunk, other furniture, cooking utensils, two spinning wheels, homemade cloth and made up clothing beside a cow, heifer, etc.

The will of Elizabeth Stace . . . was proved March 29, 1670, as "rec'd from her own mouth," by Simon Stace, Sarah Stace, Ann Stace.
She directs her body to be buryed in Ipswich burying place; and gives her son Simon "a bullock for the burial of me." She gives her son Thomas a great Bible and a damask napkin. She bequeaths legacies to her daughters Sarah Buswell, Susannah French, and daughter Meoers. "To my daughter Ann, in consideration of her staying with me in my old age, all my other household stuff."

(Essex County Probate Files, No. 26069.) Elizabeth Stace was probably widow of Simon Stacy, a proprietor of Ipswich in 1637.

Elizabeth Clerke Stacy
Birth: 1602, Harwich, England [Note by compiler: The compiler believes that the decedent was really born about 1592 in Theydon Garnon, Essex, England.]
Death: Oct. 9, 1669, Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts, USA
Simon must have been successful in business for after twenty years the possessions of his wife Elizabeth showed many comforts and even luxuries. Elizabeth survived him by 25 years. Late in 1669, Elizabeth became very ill, perhaps suddenly so as she dictated a will in the presence of three of her children "a day or two before she dyed." The will failed of her signature, so the three children stated her wishes as to what their mother's stated wishes had been.
The following is the will of Elizabeth Stacy from Essex Country Probate Record #26069.
"The words of Elizabeth Stace upon her death beads, her laste Will. Having and enjoying her understanding and memory is as follows:
First - I give my soule into the hands of Jesus Christ, my blessed Redeemer & my body to be decently buried in Ipswich Burying Place & for my outward estate, first I give my son Simon, a bullock for the buryall of me, - to my sonne Thomas Stace a bullock for the buryall of me, - to my sonne Thomas Stace a greatte Bible & damask napkins, - to my dater Sarath Busswell a velvette cushen, - to my dauter Susannah Ffrench two payers of gloves all these having reserved their poreshand before, - Then I give to my dauter Meors a bead and a blanket & coverlidde & one of my wearing cootes & to my dauter Ane in consideration of her staying with me in my owld agge & being helpful to me, for that I give to her two cowes and all my other household stuffe. Mary Meors having reseyed a portion allsoe before.
This we testify to be the last wills of Elizabeth Stase, widow of Ipswich, of the county of Essex as we received them from her owne mouth a day or two before she dyed.
Witness Simon Stace Sarah Stace Anne Stace Ipswich Mar. 29, 1670"
This was presented to the court at Ipswich on the date, and the court allowed it but declared it was no will as no executor was named in it. The court appointed Simon Stacy as an executor and ordered him to bring in an inventory, which he did.
