Ki Hassano
BIRTH: 10 Aug 1875, Japan
DEATH: 29 Jan 1961 (aged 85), Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, USA
BURIAL: Mount Moriah Cemetery, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, USA
PLOT: U.S. Navy Home Plot, Beneficiary section, row 9.
Mr. Ki Hassano (aka Hassono, Hasano, aka Kinzo, Kingo) was originally from Japan, the son of Tingo and Tio Kodo. Please read this memorial entirely before asking for a surname spelling change despite the spelling on his stone. Because he was from Japan, any spelling of his name in the US is going to be phonetic.
Family acknowledges several versions. Hassano and Hassono are noted in the text of this memorial so either may be picked up by search engines. During his life, when he appeared in city directories it was always as Hassano. When his son James wed, it was as Hassano. When he himself wed, it was as Hasano, with a single "s". You can see there is no single answer to the spelling question.
He was mentioned as Ki Hassano in the Delaware County Daily Times (Primos — Upper Darby, PA) on Sunday, May 26, 1996 in an article about people who served in the US military buried in Mount Moriah far from home, whose families may not even know where they rest.
It felt like a bit of a miracle to be contacted by his kin. A kind contributor formerly related by marriage adds the following information:
Ki Hassano was born August 10, 1875 in Japan and died January 29, 1961 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His wife Cecelia Kaufmann was born about 1882 in the state of New York. Both served in the Naval Branch of the Military. Their children were Rose, George, Josephine, Mary and my father in law, James William Hassano, with various spellings noted in a few records. James was married to Edna Mae Hicks, and had only one son: James Joseph, the contributor's ex husband, who was a career man in the US Army; he passed away January 2010. To this marriage were born Rossano Marie (Rody), James Joseph, Morina Lyn (deceased) and Joann Margaret, all of the metro-Philadelphia area. If you have a genealogical interest in the family, she has left her email address in the third flower left on this memorial: beastringerATaol.com
When I had added Mr. Hassano to the site, I felt I was throwing info to the winds, thinking family in Japan might be missing him and not know where to find him. Being contacted by family here in the states was a lovely surprise, and it is good to know he is not lost to them.
Mount Moriah records list him erroneously as Ki Hassand. He was buried on February 1, 1961 in the U.S. Navy Home Plot, Beneficiary section, row 9, but no grave number is in their records. Many thanks to Robert Hobdell for his help with this.
Additional information on Mr. Hassano's resting place: A ten-acre "Naval Asylum Plot" within the cemetery was purchased in 1864 as a burial site for residents of the Naval Asylum, later known as the Naval Home, and remained in use until 1976.
