      CANE CREEK MONTHLY MEETING

      Union County, South Carolina

Cane Creek Meeting was located on the Tiger River, in Union County, in the west-central part of South Carolina. A meeting for worship was authorized by Quarterly Meeting held at Cane Creek, North Carolina, in 11th month, 1775. A meeting had been established at Padgets Creek, in the same county, in 1774. These two meetings were attached to Bush River Monthly Meeting until 1789, when Cane Creek Monthly Meeting was established by action of New Garden Quarterly Meeting, with preparative meetings at Cane Creek and Padgets Creek. The first sitting of the Monthly Meeting was held the 21st of 11th month, 1789. The committee appointed by the Quarterly Meeting, to attend the opening, included John Sanders, William Stanley, Joseph Hiatt, Tristram Barnard, Barnabas Coffin and James Thornbrugh.

Some of the women Friends who were early members of Cane Creek Monthly Meeting, (names taken from the first pages of the women's minutes) included Keziah Bray, Elizabeth Comer, Elizabeth Cook, Martha Cook, Mary Cook, Prudence Cooper, Tamar Cox, Margaret Edmundson, Rebekah Fincher, Ann Hawkins, Edith Harlan, Lydia Highatt (Hiatt), Margaret Hunt, Sarah Lamb, Mary Marshall, Mary Milhous, Rebekah Milhous, Esther Parnell, Sarah Russell, Masse Sanders, Hannah Smith, Olive Smith, Mary Talbot, Phebe Whitson, Dinah Wilson.

Only a few certificates of removal were received and issued by the meeting between 1789 and 1803. In 1803 the migration to the north-west began with a few families, who received certificates to Westland Monthly Meeting, Pennsylvania. In 1804, a few more obtained certificates to Miami Monthly Meeting, Ohio. The migration became general in 1805, when more than twenty certificates, most of them for families, were issued to Miami. Four more were recorded in 1806. Three others, dated in 3rd month, 1807, but not recorded in the minute book, were received at Miami.

When the people of Cane Creek Monthly Meeting removed to Ohio they took the records with them. The book of records of births and deaths was continued in use by Caesars Creek Monthly Meeting, Ohio, and remains in the possession of that meeting to this day. Caesars Creek Monthly Meeting was largely made up of former members of Cane Creek Meeting, South Carolina. The books containing the marriage records and the minutes of the women's meeting were returned to North Carolina Yearly Meeting after more than one hundred years. The book of minutes of the men's meeting has not been found.

A copy of the Cane Creek-Caesars Creek birth records, containing also much collateral data, compiled by the late Kirk Brown, of Baltimore, is now in the care of North Carolina Yearly Meeting. From this book there is reproduced on the following pages all material which appears to have been in the original record book before it left South Carolina. Later births and other material, added in later years to complete these family records begun in the South, have also been included. To insure accuracy, all this has been checked with the original book, at Caesars Creek. Following these extracts from the birth records is an abstract of the women's minutes and the marriage records.
