  Notes	(1) Elizabeth Ann GRUBB: NOTES: Compiler remembers "Aunt Maine" as very proud and dignified in appearance. She was considered a "proper lady" and one for whom compiler's father felt a particular fondness. The few instances when "Aunt Maine" was to visit the GILCHRIST home were anticipated with great preparation and excitement. Her oldest daughter, Alice, and compiler's father grew up as very close friends, as well as first cousins. Maine (MOW) STICKLER was to some extent a "subsitute mother" to Virgil, and they maintained close contact over many miles and through many years. Compiler's sister, Claudia DEEN, has a letter written to Virgil by his aunt in October, 1956, which compiler has photocopied for her collection of family remembrances. The transcription of that letter follows: Oct. 31, 1956 Dear Virgil and Family - You may be surprised to hear from me after so long - but this line is to tell you I do think of you all and wonder how you are. I didnt feel I could go to Jim's wedding alone, and so I missed seeing you. I am sure every one were happy on the happy ocassion. Where will they be at home? Not to far away I hope. How is your work now? I hope you have work and able to be on the job. There seem to be plenty building going on every where, we are getting another school building at Richland Center? Ernie is back to work again but he had a rugged time after surgery - for varicose veins. I will be glad for a line to know how you & family are. Love aunt Maine (Compiler's note: The wedding she refers to was that of Jim GILCHRIST and Katherine WISHARD, Virgil's eldest son and wife. "Ernie" was Maine's son-in-law, the husband of Alice WRIGHT O'DELL. The return address on the envelope is "c/o C.D. MOW, R - 5; Rochester, Ind."?Calvin Dean MOW, Maine's cousin, with whom she made her home for a time.) Nineteen-year-old Maine MOW was the oldest of David and "Kate" MOW's children still living at home at census enumeration time, 06 June 1900. In July of the same year, she married John M. WRIGHT. Their daughter Alice Pauline was born in October of 1901. Sometime before January, 1906, this marriage ended in divorce. Little is known about John WRIGHT or the marriage; this was a subject considered closed to all discussion in the MOW family. The GILCHRISTs apparently respected this for the only thing compiler was ever told of it was that "Aunt Maine was married first to Alice's father, Mr. WRIGHT." Evidently Maine's second marriage was a much happier one for her, and Theodore STICKLER seemed to be highly respected throughout the immediate and the extended family. The STICKLERs "made history" in Fulton County when Maine gave birth to triplets in November, 1915. "The Rochester Sentinel Newspaper" carried the following story on November 20th: For the first time in sixteen years, the birth of triplets was recorded in this county, Friday when Mrs. Theodore STICHLER, who lives north of the river, became the mother of two daughters and one son. Two children are living and seem in perfect health, while one daughter was still born. The living children weigh five and six pounds, and have been named Theodore Jr. and Theodora. Mrs. STICHLER is thirty four years old and is the mother of two other children. Dr. MEEK of Tiosa, the attending physician says that it was the first time that he officiated at the arrival of triplets. The two surviving members of this birth grew up and married in Fulton County. The female, Theodora, however, died a tragic death by suicide in 1943, accidentally taking the life of her small son at the same time. On June 3, 1969 Maine STICKLER attended the funeral of her youngest sister, Gladys RIGGS, in South Bend. Immediately after the service, Maine suffered a massive stroke. She died at 1:35 p.m. on the day her sister was buried. Wilma FOLTZ has provided a photocopy of the obituary which appeared in a South Bend, IN newspaper. STROKE LEADS TO DEATH OF MRS. STICHLER Mrs. Maine STICHLER, 87, of the Haven Hubbard Nursing Home, New Carlisle, died at 1:35 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Hospital, where she had been taken after she collapsed at the Hollis Funeral Home while attending the funeral of her sister, Mrs. Gladys M. RIGGS. Death was attributed to a stroke. She was born July 27, 1881, in Fulton County and came to South Bend in 1937 from Battle Creek, Mich. Her husband, Theodore, died in 1922. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Ernest O'DELL, Mrs. Frank CAUFFMAN and Mrs. Hugh STEININGER, all of South Bend; a son, Theodore of Gas City, Ind.; nine grandchildren; and two brothers, Omer MOW of South Bend and Carleton MOW of Moses Lake, Wash. Two other daughters preceded her in death. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Lydick United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert SEITZ, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Richland Center. Friends may call at the Forest G. HAY and Son Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 Thursday. According to the 1900 census, she was born in IN, and both of her parents were born in IN. According to the 1900 census, Maine A. was single as of the actual census enumeration date of June 6, 1900.
