Hardesty & Co., 1882, p. 26: BARNETT MANN — is a son of David Mann and Margaret Griffin, who came to Monroe county in 1816, and are now both deceased. Mr. Mann was born in Bedford county, Pennsylvania, in 1807; settled in Monroe county in 1816, and is engaged in farming and stock-raising. He was married March 6, 1834, to Mary Read. She was born in North Surrey, England, February 17, 1813, her parents being John Read, who died January 15, 1847, and Mary (Andrews) Read, who died May 6, 1856. They came to Monroe county in 1834. The children of Barnett and Mary Mann are: Elizabeth, born November 22, 1834, died December 11, 1851; John R., May 24, 1837, and living at home; David, March 30, 1840, died March 24, 1864; Wilson, May 16, 1842, lives at home; Henry A., July 9, 1844, lives at home; Ann M., August 19, 1846, died June 25, 1847; Elman, July 6, 1848, died November 17, 1850; Oliver, December 5, 1850, died October 24, 1857; Harriet, May 24, 1853, died August 6, 1871; Austin, December 4, 1855, lives at home. David Mann, son of Barnett Mann, enlisted in the 116th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in 1861, and died in hospital in the spring of 1864. Mr. Barnett Mann was commissioner of Monroe county from 1860 to 1867, and has been trustee of Malaga, Summit and Centre townships, in all for about fifteen years. Mr. Mann was one of the earliest settlers of Malaga township. When he first came here his nearest neighbors were about six or seven miles away, except two or three families. At that time there were a great many deer, wolves, wildcats, etc., in the country. Mr. Mann is engaged in farming, and is the owner of 500 acres of land, situated in Malaga township. At the time of his death he was 90 years, 9 months and 11 days old. Mr. Mann lived in Monroe county 81 years. In 1833 he united in marriage to Miss Mary Read, of Noble county and they lived together 61 years. Unto them were born eleven children, eight sons and three daughters, of whom seven died before their parents. Four sons are still living and were all at their father’s funeral to mourn the loss of a loving parents. Their mother died in 1894. So has departed one more of Monroe county’s esteemed and honored citizens, and so must all who are left behind in like manner go. May all prepare to meet their God, and death will be no terror to them when it comes. There was a large gathering at the funeral services. The writer of these notes was called to conduct the services at the home of the deceased. Elder B. S.
