(2) The Jersey Journal, Jersey City, NJ, Monday, Aug 13, 1928:
Hazel Deyo Batchelor, Writer, Found Dead In N. Y. Home
Former Jersey City and Hoboken Girl's Body Found Kneeling at Bed —
Autopsy to Be Performed, But Death Is Thought Natural.
Mrs. Hazel Deyo Batchelor, 38-year-old writer of fiction, a former resident of Jersey City, was found dead yesterday in her apartment at 62 Washington Square South, New York. Her body was discovered by Hattie Johnson, a colored maid, as she entered the apartment to clean. A huge police dog, Fang, stood guard over the body of his mistress.
The body was leaning against the bed in an attitude of prayer. Assistant Medical Examiner Mlles who was calIed to the scene said he will make a complete autopsy today. The woman had evidently been dead for several hours. Dr. Miles said that he believes death was due to natural causes. Dr. Hannah Kuhner of 15 West Eighth Street, who first examined the body, said that kidney trouble was the cause of death.
Mrs. Batchelor, whose fiction has been published in many magazines, was the wife of C. D. Batchelor, newspaper cartoonist. They had not been living together for several months although they were not legally separated. Bachelor [sic] said that he had phoned his wife Saturday night but did not get a response.
Mrs. W. C. Deyo of 2767 Boulevard, this city, mother of the dead woman, is in Europe.
Mrs. Batcheor was born at 930 Hoboken Street, Hoboken, May 3, 1990, and attended the public schools of that city. While at Hoboken High School she was editor of the school magazine. After her graduation from high school, 1909, she attended Smith College and in her senior year won the prize for the Ivy Song in a competition with 130 other girls.
After leaving college she joined the staff of the New York Journal. Later she became an author of fiction. With her husband, Charles D. Batchelor, she took up newspaper syndicate work.
Mr. Batchelor told the police that his. wife had not been in good health for many years and that she had suffered from heart trouble. He said that they [sic] was no reason why she should end her life. Police agreed that there was no cause for suspecting violence had caused her death.
Batchelor collapsed when he first heard of the death. He said that despite his separation from his wife, he had always loved her. He vigorously denied that she had been addicted to drink. Dr. A. Keightley of 5 West Eighth Street, who attended Mrs. Batchelor, refused to make any statement.
Arrangements have not yet been completed for the funeral.
