  Notes	(1) Hendrickson, John B., Hendrickson and Allied Families: Genealogical and Biographical, New York, NY: The American Historical Company, Inc., 1969, p. 1: The name Hendrickson is of Dutch origin, denoting "the son of Hendrick," the Dutch form of Henry. Hereditary surnames were not generally adopted in The Netherlands nearly as early as in the British Isles, and it was the usual practice among the Dutch founders of what is now New York for a son to use his father's given name with the suffix -se, -sen or -son as his surname. Thus developed the surnames Adrianse, Martinson, Remsen, Hendrickson, and many others. Hendrick Harmanszen, progenitor of this line in America, was born probably in Holland, and died in the Indian massacre on Long Island in 1643. A native of Lent on the Rhine, he served as an armorer in the Dutch army, and was present at the capture of Curaçao in the West Indies in 1634. He arrived in New Netherland in or before 1637, and the following year was granted a large farm facing the East River on Long Island, which tract is now part of La Guardia Airport. In 1639 he obtained the lease of a farm on Manhattan Island east of what is now Chatham Square, but continued to reside on Long Island, building a tide mill and a forge. Hendrick Harmanszen married, probably in Holland, Tryntie, or Catharine Herxker, who died before March 3, 1652. She married (second), February 26, 1645, Jeuriaen Fradel.
