(3) Starnes, H. Gerald & Starnes, Herman, Of Them That Left a Name Behind - A History of the Starnes Family, Baltimore, MD: Gateway Press, 1983, pp. 704-705:
His [Charles Starnes'] widow died about the year 1820. Her estate was executed by their son, Paul Starnes; legatees were Elizabeth Bost, John, Martin, and Sally Starnes. . . .
Paul Starnes, the eldest son of Charles Starnes of Cabarrus County, N.C., is found listed in the 1840 census of Lexington County, S.C. Paul's whereabouts, between his mother's death in 1820 and his appearance in Lexington County, S.C., are unknown, but the 1850 census of Orangeburg County, S.C. sheds some light on the matter.
It seems that his firstborn child, Harriet (b. 1830), was born in S.C. as were the rest of his named children. His wife was named Winnie. She may have been an Altman since an elderly lady named Pruda Altman is recorded in the household.
In the 1850 census Paul's children were: James Wesley, Harriet, William, Joshua, Lounzo, Sally, John, Betsey, and Emmaline. Another child, Ezekiel, was later listed in the 1860 census.
All of the above children, with perhaps the exception of Lounzo, died in the vicinity of Orangeburg County. Lounzo, also known as Randy, is reported to have lived in Alabama.
James Wesley Starnes, Paul's eldest son, married Lavitha Harley and is listed in the 1860 Orangeburg County Census as having in his household the following children: Elizabeth, Harley, Paul, and Wesley. In the Fairfield Census of 1860 there also appears: "Wesley Starnes, age 30 male, occupation miller, value of personal estate $2,000, born N.C." In the Orangeburg County Census, James Wesley is listed with a different wife and the following children: Harley, Frances, Paul, Lucy, Wesley, Martin, Charley, Abie, and Peter.
James Wesley Starnes continued to perpetuate the ancestral names in his own family.
