      In the Name of God Amen I Thomas Marchant of Sevenoaks in the County of Kent peruke maker being weak in body but of sound and disposing mind memory and understanding praised be God for the same do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following (that is to say) ffirst and principally I recommend my Soul into the Gracious acceptance of Almighty God my Creator Asking for Salvation by and through the merits and intercession of Jesus Christ my Saviour and Redeemer and my body I commit to the Earth to be decently buried by and at the discretion of my Executors hereinafter named and as to such worldly Estate and property wherewith it has pleased God to bless me with I give devise and dispose thereof as follows ffirst I give and bequeath unto my dear Wife Elizabeth and to my respected ffriend John Covell of Sevenoaks Collar Maker and to the Survivor of them and the Executors and Administrators of such Survivor All my household Goods and ffurniture Stock in Trade ready money money in the public ffunds Bills Bonds Mortgages Notes I have and other Securities for money and all other my Goods Chattels personal Estate and Effects of what nature kind or quality soever the same may be upon the several Trusts herein mentioned of and receiving the same In Trust in the first place to make true and perfect Inventory of the said Goods Chattels and Effects and to call in and receive all such debts Sum and Sums of money (or to alter and change the same as to them shall seem just and necessary) that shall be due and owing to me on such Bills Bonds Mortgages Notes I have or otherwise at the time of my decease Then upon Trust I give devise and bequeath unto my said Wife (for and during the term of her natural life) and to the said John Covell All that my Messuage or Tenement situate lying and being in Sevenoaks Town and now in my own occupation and also all those five Messauges Tenements or Cottages lying and being in Sundrish [?] (now in the several Tenures or occupations of John Norton _____ Hunt _____ Bower _____ Martin and _____ Sutton) and to the Survivor of them the Executors and Administrators of such Survivor of her my said Wife and the said John Covell and I do hereby order and direct that the Wife's issues and profits thereof and of every part thereof shall be paid to my said Wife during the term of her natural life for her sole use and benefit and for the better to enable her to bring up and support all my children that shall be living at the time of my decease And I do hereby declare that her receipt alone shall be a sufficient discharge to the said John Covell his Executors or Administrators for the same and from and immediately after the decease of my said Wife I do hereby give devise and bequeath all that my said Messuage or Tenement situate and being in Sevenoaks town and now in my own occupation as aforesaid unto my two daughters (namely ffrances Marchant and Ann Marchant[)] equally between them as tenants in common and not as joint tenants and to their heirs for ever but if either of them my said daughters (namely ffrances and Ann) should depart this life before they shall have come into actual possession of the said Messuage or Tenement and without having any issue her surviving then I do hereby give devise and bequeath the said Messuage or Tenement unto the Survivor of them and to her heirs for ever but if both of them my said daughters (ffrances and Ann) should depart this life and without leaving any issue her or them surviving then I do hereby give devise and bequeath the said Messuage or Tenement unto and amongst all my Children that shall be then living as well Daughters as Sons equally between them as tenants in common and not as joint tenants and to their heirs for ever Also I do hereby from and immediately after the decease of my said Wife give devise and bequeath All those ffive Messauages Tenements or Cottages situate and being in Sundrish [?] aforesaid (and now in the several tenures and occupations of the said John Norton _____ Hunt _____ Bower _____ Martin and _____ Sutton) unto my other two daughters (namely) Elizabeth Marchant and Margaret Marchant equally between them as tenants in common and not as joint tenants and to their heirs for ever but if either of them my said daughters (namely) Elizabeth and Margaret should depart this life before they shall have come into actual possession of the said several Messuages Tenements or Cottages and without having any issue her surviving then I do hereby give devise and bequeath the said several Messuages Tenements or Cottages unto the Survivor of them & to her heirs for ever but if both of them my said daughters Elizabeth and Margaret should depart this life and without leaving any issue her or them surviving Then I do hereby give devise and bequeath the said several Messuages Tenements or Cottages unto and amongst all my Children that shall be then living as well Daughters as Sons equally between them as tenants in common and not as joint tenants and to their heirs for ever Then as to for touching and concerning all the rest residue and remainder of my personal Estate and Effects and ready money after payment of my just debts ffuneral expences probate of this my Will and other incident charges Upon this further Trust that they my said Trustees or the Survivor of them or the Executors or Administrators of such Survivor shall and do as soon as conveniently may be after their receipt thereof or any part thereof place out and invest the same on Government or other Securities as to them shall seem most adviseable and to pay and apply the yearly Interest Dividends and Annual produce thereof as the same shall from time to time be received unto my said Wife to and for her own use and benefit and the better to enable her to support and maintain herself and Children for and during the term of natural life and from and immediately after her decease Then upon Trust to pay and apply the whole of such residue and remainder of my said monies as aforesaid unto and amongst all my Children who shall be living at the decease of my said Wife share and share alike as they shall respectively attain their ages of twenty one years But in Case any one or more of my said Children shall happen to die before his her or their respective share or shares shall become payable having left issue him her or them surviving that then such issue shall come in for and be entitled unto their respective ffathers or mothers share or shares as well Original as arriving in such manner and in such proportions as their several ffathers and mothers would have been entitled unto the same provided always and I do hereby order and direct that they my said Trustees or the Survivor of them or the Executors or Administrators of either of them shall not be answerable or accountable for any money received under the Trusts hereby created any otherwise than each person for such money as he or she shall respectively and actually receive and no one of them shall be answerable or accountable for the acts receipts neglects or defaults of the other of them nor for any loss or damage that shall happen in placing out the said Monies or any part thereof unless such loss or damage shall happen by or through his her or their voluntary or wilful default or neglect provided also and it is my further mind will and meaning and I do hereby order and direct that they my said Trustees and the Survivor of them and the Executors and Administrators of either of them shall and may in the first place out of the monies which shall come to their hands under and by virtue of the Trusts aforesaid deduct retain and repay to him her or themselves all such Costs Charges damages and expences as they shall respectively sustain or be put unto and for their time and trouble in the operation of the Trusts hereby in them reposed And Lastly I do hereby make and ordain my said Wife Elizabeth and the said John Covell joint Executrix and Executor of this my last Will and Testament hereby revoking and making void all former and other Wills by me at any time heretofore made declaring and publishing this only to be my true last Will and Testament In Witness whereof I the said Thomas Marchant the Testator to this my last Will and Testament contained in three sheets of paper to the first two sheets thereof have set my hand and seal the ninth day of ffebruary in the thirty eighth year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the third by the Grace of God of Great Britain ffrance and Ireland King Defender of the ffaith and so forth and in the year of our Lord One thousand seven hundred and ninety eight.
