Wednesday at McCune-Brooks Hospital where he was admitted about a week ago. He had been ill for several years. Born Dec. 25, 1889, at Sarcoxie, he lived in Hillsdale, OK until moving to Carthage 67 years ago. He was married to Margaret Frost, who survives. A barber, Mr. Downey operated a barber shop for many years where Moyne Norris Studio is now located. He was a member of First Christian Church. Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are four sons, Harold J. Downey, R.R. #4; J. E. Downey Jr., R.R. #6; L. J. Downey, 1133 S. Main St. and Donald A. Downey, Rogers, Ark. Three daughters, Mrs. Velma Marietta, Anaheim, CA, Mrs. Lorene Clinton, Morgan Heights, and Mrs. Phyllis J. Hamilton, 1028 Sophia St., Carthage, MO., 11 grandchildren, 16 great children, and one great-great grandchild. A son James Francis Downey preceded him in death July 21, 1979. Funeral services will be at 2 P.M. Friday at Ulmer Funeral Home. Bob Lyttle and Ed White will officiate. Burial will be in Park Cemetery under direction of Ulmer Funeral Home.
