George Conrad SHINDLER, b. bef. 1752, Neuffen, Wurtemburg [Württemberg] Province, Germany, d. by Aug 1812, Jefferson Co., VA., probably married in Germany. When he married a 2nd. time, he was listed as a widower. No record has been found to indicate if his first wife died in GER or came to America with him. Conrad appears on List C (Oath of Abjuration) imported on Snow Louisa, Capt John Pittcarin, from Rotterdam, last from Cowes, took the usual qualificatons No. 71 on 8 Nov 1752. On 2 Jul 1753, in Trinity Lutheran KB, Lancaster Co., PA, he m. 2nd. Maria Barbara PETER (nee WOLTER, d/o David WOLTER of Friedelsheem, GER. Maria had m. 1st. in 1730, George Philip PETER, s/o George Bernhard PETER, by whom she had 6 children, and after the death of her husband, she and the children emigrated to America from Wacherheim [Wachenheim], GER in 1752. He had at least 2 children by Maria; Maria and Johann George. Their births and baptisms were recorded in the records of St. Michael's (or Zion) Lutheran Church in Philadelphia, PA. [In] 1770 he owned 100 acres in Chester Co., PA, and in 1771, 160 acres in York Co., PA in 1777. He appears on the 1783 tax list in York Twp., York Co., PA, with 4 males, 3 females, 169 acres, 3 horned cattle, 2 horses, 5 sheep, 1 house and 1 out house, valued at 173 lbs, rage 4 3/4, tax, 3-4-0. He was a coppersmith and fought in the revolution as a private. According to Kenamond, Prominent Men of Shepherdstown, two of his copper kettles were supposed to be in the museum at Valley Forge. In Mar 2008, the compiler visited Valley Forge, but they had no record of copper kettles ever being in the museum, or Washington's Headquarters. He bought his first property of record, 68 acres, in Berkeley Co., VA, in 17 Apr 1792, part of the original Nicholas Lemon grant near Kearneysville, present day Jefferson Co. There is no record of his 2nd. wife in Jefferson Co., indicating that she must have died in PA. It is probable that all of his children were b. in PA prior to his move to Jefferson Co., and that he must have married a 3rd. time. His 2nd. wife, Maria Barbara WOLTER, would have been too old to have had at least the 4 youngest children, Johann George, Richard, Elizabeth, Nancy, and George Conrad. Given that she m. 1st. in 1730 and on average her birth date would have been 1705-1715 , she would have been at least 54 when Richard was born, and well over 60 years when the remainder were born. Also there is gap of 7 years between the birth of Johnann George and Richard, which may indicate that Maria WOLTER died and George Conrad married a 3rd. time. . . .
