George Edward Klingelhofer II, president of PBI Industries of Rochester, died Saturday at UPMC Shadyside of a hemorrhagic stroke. He was 78.
Mr. Klingelhofer, of Fox Chapel, graduated cum laude from Shadyside Academy in 1943, received a bachelor of science degree from Yale University in 1949, and a master of education degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1974.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946, assigned to the 88th Infantry Division in the Italian Theater of Operations, and was awarded a Bronze Star. He continued to serve from 1950 until 1954, as a second lieutenant in the Officers' Reserve Corps.
Mr. Klingelhofer was president of PBI Industries in Beaver County, a specialty steel company owned by his family from 1890 until it was sold in 1985. He established the BridgeBuilders Foundation in 1951, which helps at-risk children throughout the country.
He was affiliated with the Young Presidents Organization, the American Institute of Steel Construction, the Fox Chapel Golf Club and the Rolling Rock Club.
He was a dedicated environmentalist, an accomplished athlete, enjoyed photography and was devoted to his family, according to his wife, Kathleen.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Katherine K. Wilson, of Orono, Maine, and Kristan C. Guthrie, of San Francisco; a son, G. Edward Klingelhofer III, of San Francisco; and seven grandchildren. He also is survived by stepchildren, Stephanie Oldfield of Austin, Texas; Evan Maxwell, of Anchorage, Alaska; and Warren Maxwell of Pittsburgh.
Friends will be received from5 to 8 p.m. today at H. Samson Funeral Home, 537 N. Neville St., Oakland. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., tomorrow at Calvary Episcopal Church, 315 Shady Ave., Shadyside. Burial will be in Homewood Cemetery.
