      NOTES:

Studying census records and other documents in Fulton County, IN for the late 1800s, compiler discovered that Thomas GILCHRIST, father of James K. and grandfather of Clyde Nafe GILCHRIST, was a neighbor of a family whose surname was "NAFE." Further research on the family revealed that the NAFEs had a son near the same age as James K. GILCHRIST, whose name was "Clyde." Later research resulted in compiler obtaining a copy of Clyde GILCHRIST's application for his World War I draft card from which compiler discovered that his full name was "Clyde Nafe GILCHRIST." It is very likely that James K. GILCHRIST and Clyde NAFE were close friends, and that James later
named his son in honor of his Fulton County friend and neighbor.

Compiler had been unsuccessful in locating documents for Clyde N. GILCHRIST or for his family until the summer of 1997, when compiler's
brother, Jim GILCHRIST, located a Howard PAINTER in Zanesville, OH. Guessing that there must be a connection to Howard PAINTER, Clyde's step father, Jim contacted Mr. PAINTER. He also made contact with the wife of a "Virgil GILCHRIST", living in the same area. Mr. GILCHRIST proved to have no family connection to compiler's line, but his wife, taking a personal interest in "our cause", set out to see how much information she might be able to collect about our branch of this family.

Through Mrs. GILCHRIST's efforts, compiler located the secretary of the Euclid Avenue United Methodist Church, where Clyde had been a member. Many months elapsed before the secretary responded to the initial query, but, in October, 1997, a single sheet of paper was returned to compiler with the following information concerning Clyde N. GILCHRIST, taken from church records and from an interview with Paul BOWERS, apparently a member of the church who knew Clyde personally.

      and church records

      Clyde Nafe GILCHRIST
      very distinguished looking gentelman*
      bald head
      sang in the choir
      worked at Armco Steel
      joined the church 12/1/57
      died 6/14/66
      lived at 3365 Dresden Road
(*The spelling is as it appears on the notes sent to compiler.)

Clyde was mentioned in his grandfather's will in 1918 and was granted his father's share of Thomas GILCHRIST's estate after Thomas
died in 1926. Byron GILCHRIST reports that Clyde had "a lady friend" with whom he maintained a long relationship, but they never married.

In Dec. 1997, Byron's daughter, Mary Alice GILCHRIST wrote her recollections of visiting the GILCHRIST-PAINTER families in Zanesville in her youth.

"...We visited them at least once, probably prior to gasoline rationing in WWII. We likely took Grandpa GILCHRIST...I do remember they had a parrot that talked, ...

...Clyde was short, round, and bald. He walked with a limp. I think as a child he accidentally had cut himself with an ax. Anyway, his knee was stiff and at an angle so that he stepped with his toe. He was a manager of some sort at Armco which was a steel rolling mill. He took us there to see the work one night.

Mabel was his lady friend. I don't recall her last name, /It just came to me. Llewellyn/, but she died just a few years ago at an advanced age. She had had a good job with the telephone company. After she retired she traveled a great deal and kept in touch with my parents. Both her husband and child died during the flu epidemic of 1918. That is why she would never marry Clyde although he apparently had asked her several times. The two of them visited in SB (South Bend) one summer.

...On the other hand, as I wrote above, Cecile and Clyde did not resemble each other in appearance in anyway, but they shared the same house on Dresden Road as long as they lived as far as I know...

(Note: Cecile was Clyde's half-sister. She was widowed in the 1940s, and she and Clyde shared a home.)
