He was born in Camas Valley, Oregon on April 5, 1888 to James Allen Kirkendall and Missouri Ann Belieu Kirkendall and was the last surviving of their 16 children. He married Ruby May Montgomery in Camas Valley on June 30, 1912. She preceded him in death on September 30, 1968. Three children survive, Mrs. Eugene TreFethren (Leola) of Reno, Nevada; M. Allene Jacobson of Tonopah, Nevada; and S. Ray Kirkendall of Central Point, Oregon; seven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Kirkendall worked as a logger after leaving Camas Valley, mainly around Powers, Remote and Bridge. He operated the Bug House Garage at Bridge for several years with his cousin Dow McBee. He moved to Coquille where he worked on the construction of Smith Woods plywood then remained as a panel patcher. His hobby was myrtlewood novelties and furniture. He went to Tonopah, Nevada to enter mining with his son-in-law Ira Jacobson, but soon returned to Cooston to work for Menasha. After retirement, he had a berry farm near Cooston, selling this when his wife died and moving to Reno for the winter. He returned to reside at Lapping's Stables in Englewood, then moved to Lakeside two years ago and after being in the hospital, he entered The Colonial Care Center in Coos Bay on Ocean Boulevard on July 8, 1976 where he passed away on August 9, 1976. He was a member of the Senior Citizens in North Bend and Lakeside; the Senior Citizens for Better Care, North Bend and Golden Age Club No. 1, Coos Bay. Funeral services are Thursday, August 12 at Campbell Watkins Funeral Home in Coos Bay at 2 p.m. Internment at Ocean View Memorial Gardens in Coos Bay, Empire District. The family requests in lieu of flowers that donations be sent to the American Cancer Society, 1170 Winsor, North Bend, Oregon 97459 or the local Heart Fund.
