Elizabeth 'Liz' Gilliland 1912 - 2003
for the Sun-Telegraph
Elizabeth 'Liz' Gilliland, 91, of Sidney, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, at Regional West Hospital in Scottsbluff. Graveside services and interment will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 8 at Greenwood Cemetery in Sidney.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Kings Daughters of Sidney, the Girls Athletic Dept. at Sidney High School or the Girls Athletic Dept. at Mitchell High School. The family will host a lunch reception following the services at Liz's home at 1445 Maple in Sidney.
Liz's mother came to Kansas in a covered wagon where she married Claude Thomas. Elizabeth was born Jan. 15, 1912 [1911 according to Social Security records] at Leota [sic; should be Leoti], Kan. Liz attended and graduated from Scott City High School in Kansas where she excelled in basketball. She then attended Ft. Hay State College in Hays, Kan. where she obtained a teacher's degree. She married J. R. Gilliland in Garden City, Kan. in 1937. For their honeymoon they took a train from Dallas, Texas which was J. R.'s hometown to Mexico City. In the early years of their marriage they lived in Kansas, Arkansas, Texas, Wyoming and Scottsbluff as they followed J. R.'s job as a geologist for General Oil, an oil exploration company. They made Sidney their permanent home in 1951.
She worked for Hardy-Clark Furniture Store in Sidney and was actively inolved in the King's Daughters of Sidney. Her involvement in King's Daughters brought her much happiness, especially the delivery of food baskets during Christmas. Liz was an accomplished golfer and an avid bridge player and had a keen interest in current events and politics. She was a big fan of all sports but had no bigger interest than that of Husker Football, Sidney and Mitchell High athletics. She watched or listened to all of the Husker football games and became a fan of the Nebraska women's basketball team. When she could no longer attend the games she listed to all the Sidney High School athletic events on the radio. She followed current events and politics very closely and was very proud of the fact that she met and visited with President and Mrs. Bush in Austin, Texas. Liz was a member of the Christian Scientist Church of Scottsbluff. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Belle, brother Capp and husband J. R.
She is survived by two sons, Tom of Austin and Terry and wife Sonya of Scottsbluff; four grandchildren, Tanya Carter of Castle Rock, Colo., Todd of Scottsbluff, Traci of Scottsbluff and Troy and wife Jeanne of Cleveland, Ohio; seven great-grandchildren, Lauren, Paige and Reid of Castle Rock, Colo., Hannah, Drew and Drake of Scottsbluff and Max of Cleveland.
Gehrig and Son Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
