Robert King), was age 15 when his mother (Sarah Hill) died, and was age 18 when he volunteered for service in the Indiana heavy artillery unit fighting in the Civil War, in July 1861. Prior to this he had been apprenticed to a carpenter and was living next door to his father, Jesse George, at Ligonier, Noble County, Indiana. . . . He preceded his father in enlisting for service in the Civil War, by two months, having joined up with Co. A, 21st Regt. Indiana Volunteer Infantry, Capt. Roy's Company, in July 1861. He was then within a month of being eighteen. On August 5th, 1862, he was slightly injured at Baton Rouge, Louisiana and was in the St. James Hospital at New Orleans for a few months. By January of 1863 he was a corporal in his company, but was back down to a private within a three-month period. By this time the unit had been designated Co. A, 1st Regt., Indiana Siege Artillery, and within another six months (December 1863) he again held the rant of corporal. In January of 1864 he reenlisted for another three years and received a $60 bounty. His unit then became known as 1st Regt., Indiana Heavy Artillery, and in August of this year he was promoted to sergeat. However, by the next January, he was back to being a buck private again. Robert must have bent the rules somewhere along the line. He was on detached duty, in charge of a government ice house in Louisiana, toward the end of . . . 1865, and perhaps this lonely duty led to actions unbehooving a sergeant. It appears that the paths of Robert and his father did not cross during their participation in the war. Robert was discharged in January of 1866 at Baton Rouge, at age 21??, still a private. The war had ended eight months before this. (21) Groh, House of Andrew, p. 54: Robert King Simpson made his last will and testament of January 27, 1914, just two months before he died in Hillsboro. He bequeathed to each of his five children one dollar and bequeathed his granddaughter, Amelia Margaret Peterson, $250, to be paid to her when she reached age 20. . . . All the remainder of Robert's property was left to his wife, Amelia, with the exception of a $2,600 note executed by their son, Robert William. Amelia was to receive the interst on this note until her death and was to have the privilege of drawing on the principal, if need be. Again, the graddaughter, Amelia Margaret Peterson, was mentioned, to receive one-fourth of any remaining sum of the $2,600 note, provided she remained living with her grandmother (Amelia) and cared for her until her death. . . . Son, Robert William, was then to have the remaining three-quarters of the $2,600 note at the death of his mother. If Amelia Margaret Peterson did not adhere to the proviso of remaining with her grandmother, then Robert William was to become sole owner of the note.
