  Notes	(1) Scammon, George Frank, Jr., Genealogy of the Family of Scammon/Scamman, Methuen, MA: 1971, preface: Scammonden is the name of a place near the River Ripon in Yorkshire, England. It is a part of Huddersfield Parish, with which its population is reckoned, but it is situated seven miles west. We are quite confident that there is some connection between that place and the Scammon family. . . . The first Scammon we find mentioned in America is Richard Scammon, who, according to Farmer's Genealogical Register, was living at Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1640 and it is with this Richard Scammon that this record begins. All available records indicate that he was the first of the family to arrive in America. He emigrated from England, via the Barbadoes Islands & arrived in Boston abt. 1630. From Boston, he moved to Portsmouth, N.H. & was living there in 1640. He later lived in Dover, N.H. He was probably born, in England, abt. 1600 & died, in Dover, N.H., abt. 1660. Foxcroft, 1880, p. 13: Tradition informs us that Hugh Gunnison was born in Sweden, but came to America a single man, with an English Colony composed of five families, named respectively Scammons, Frost, Bryar and Raynes, two of the families bearing the same name.
