    • (1) Charles STARNES is shown here as a son of Frederick STARNES II, although the compiler has no conclusive proof that Charles was Frederick II's son. Charles is shown here as Frederick II's son in order to stimulate further research.

      (2) Steelman, Sanford, The Starnes Family Four Generation Project <>:

Charles Starnes (born ca 1756, died ca 1807) married Caty. Their children:

      a. Elizabeth Starnes

      b. Martin Starnes.

      c. John Starnes.

      d. Sally Starnes.

      e. Paul Starnes.

NOTE: The placement of Charles Starnes is a difficult one, and based upon scanty information. Charles is shown as a legatee of the estate of Matthias Beaver in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, and executed a receipt for his share in the estate in 1792. However, the record of the sale of the assets of the estate was held in 1781. Being a descendant of Matthias Beaver, I know that Matthias came to eastern Mecklenburg County in the early 1760's. There is no evidence that Matthias Beaver ever emigrated to southwest Virginia as did many of the members of the Starnes family. The Starnes that ultimately settled in Mecklenburg County after the Revolutionary War appear to be descendants of either Frederick Starnes, Jr. or Joseph Starnes. Joseph's branch of the family did not come back to North Carolina until around 1784. The status of legatee of Matthias Beaver seems to place Charles Starnes in North Carolina prior to 1784. This would be consistent with his brothers, John and Conrad being in North Carolina prior to 1784. Charles Starnes was named as a Constable of Cabarrus County in January of 1793. This seems to place him as one of the older of the second-generation Starnes in Mecklenburg County, and makes him more likely to be a son of Frederick Starnes, Jr. Charles' status as a legatee of Matthias Beaver may indicate that he married a daughter of Matthias Beaver.

The listing of the children of Charles Starnes comes from a deed dated 1808 recorded in Deed Book 9, page 431 of the Cabarrus County Registry. The 1790 and 1800 census entries for Charles Starnes indicate one daughter and three sons. This is consistent with the heirs shown in the deed, which show 3 sons and 2 daughters, one of whom was married.

      (4) Starnes, H. Gerald & Starnes, Herman, Of Them That Left a Name Behind - A History of the Starnes Family, Baltimore, MD: Gateway Press, 1983, pp. 704-705:

The 1790 Census of Mecklenburg County, N.C. shows Charles Starnes as having 1 child, a son under 16, which would be Paul. . . .

During the years 1801 to 1802, Charles Starnes purchased land from William Folk in Cabarrus County, N.C. which bordered on his own land. Charles Starnes does not appear on the 1800 or 1810 census. His widow died about the year 1820. Her estate was executed by their son, Paul Starnes; legatees were Elizabeth Bost, John, Martin, and Sally Starnes. . . .

Paul Starnes, the eldest son of Charles Starnes of Cabarrus County, N.C., is found listed in the 1840 census of Lexington County, S.C. Paul's whereabouts, between his mother's death in 1820 and his appearance in Lexington County, S.C., are unknown, but the 1850 census of Orangeburg County, S.C. sheds some light on the matter.

It seems that his firstborn child, Harriet (b. 1830), was born in S.C. as were the rest of his named children. His wife was named Winnie. She may have been an Altman since an elderly lady named Pruda Altman is recorded in the household.

In the 1850 census Paul's children were: James Wesley, Harriet, William, Joshua, Lounzo, Sally, John, Betsey, and Emmaline. Another child, Ezekiel, was later listed in the 1860 census.

All of the above children, with perhaps the exception of Lounzo, died in the vicinity of Orangeburg County. Lounzo, also known as Randy, is reported to have lived in Alabama.

James Wesley Starnes, Paul's eldest son, married Lavitha Harley and is listed in the 1860 Orangeburg County Census as having in his household the following children: Elizabeth, Harley, Paul, and Wesley. In the Fairfield Census of 1860 there also appears: "Wesley Starnes, age 30 male, occupation miller, value of personal estate $2,000, born N.C." In the Orangeburg County Census, James Wesley is listed with a different wife and the following children: Harley, Frances, Paul, Lucy, Wesley, Martin, Charley, Abie, and Peter.

James Wesley Starnes continued to perpetuate the ancestral names in his own family.
