    • (1) Obituary, Tulsa World, January 18, 2004:

FERRIS - Craig, pioneer Geophysicist and President of GraviMetrics, Inc., passed away on January 14, 2004 at the age of 90. Craig was born in Los Angeles on March 22, 1913 to Joseph E. and Mary R. Ferris and moved with his family to Wichita, KS at the age of four. He attended Franklin Elementary School, Allison Junior High School and graduated from East High School in 1931. He started selling "Wichita Eagles" at the corner of Main and Douglas at the age of five on Armistice Day, November 11, 1918. He won a prize for building a model Cessna Monoplane at the age of 14. He started part time work at Travel Air Mfg. Co. (now Beechcraft) at the age of 16 and at 18 was employed at Stearman (now Boeing). He enrolled at Friends University that same year (1931) and graduated three years later in 1934 with an A.B. degree in Physics at the height of the Depression. Craig met Sue, his wife of 69 years, during the summer of 1933 at the Miss Wichita Beauty Pageant where she was crowned Miss Wichita. They were married on September 9, 1934 just prior to moving to Norman where he attended graduate school at the University of Oklahoma for two years on a scholarship. Craig and his classmates were later to become the "who's who" in early geophysics. Craig accepted his first professional job as a Physicist with the American Seismograph Co. in 1936. His job was that of a "jug hustler" on a seismic crew working out of Bay City, TX for $4 a day. Craig and Sue arrived in Bay City in a Model A Ford with all their possessions. Craig subsequently joined the rapidly expanding firm of Mott-Smith Corp. in 1938 to begin his long career in the gravity business. Craig worked on Mott-Smith gravity crews from 1938-1943 covering territory from the Gulf of Mexico into Canada. Craig and Sue's sons, Craig Jr. and Jon were born on the doodlebug trail in Louisiana and Kansas in the years 1938 and 1940 respectively. Craig and Sue moved many times on short notice to fulfill their work in geophysical exploration. This nomadic life qualified them the title of 'doodlebuggers.' In September, 1943, Craig and E.V. McCollum, Chief Geophysicist, for Mott-Smith Corp., and their wives, Sue and Corine, founded E.V. McCollum & Company, a partnership, and moved to Tulsa to establish themselves as geophysical contractors. Craig and Mack operated gravity and seismic crews in North America, South America and Africa for 37 years until 1980, when the partnership was dissolved. Craig and Sue founded GraviMetrics, Inc. in 1980, a company which still exists and a company from which Craig never retired. This proprietary business is one of the very few that has not been merged into another company over 61 years of riding the cyclical, roller-coaster, and boom-bust behavior of the geophysical contracting business. During this time Craig published several noteworthy professional papers on methods of gravity exploration for oil and minerals. Craig had been honored twice by his alma mater, Friends University. Craig received the Friends University Distinguished Alumni Award in 1971 and an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree in 1974. Craig had maintained an active and continuous membership in the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) for 64 years. He was the founding Chairman of the SEG Museum Committee in 1985 and served the Society in multitude of positions over his long membership. The Society of Exploration Geophysicists awarded him Honorary Membership in 1987 for his outstanding contributions to the Society and to the science of geophysics. Craig was also a charter member of the Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists and had been a member for 58 years. He was also Trustee Associate of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists Foundation. He had also been a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists for 58 years and was awarded that Association's Pioneer Award in 2002 for his most noteworthy contribution to the application and use of early geophysical methods. Craig was President of the Geophysical Society of Tulsa in 1963, an honor which his son, Jon, later held. Craig was President of the Tulsa Men's Club in 1962 and President of the Tulsa Science Foundation in 1969. Craig served on the AAA of Oklahoma Board of Directors for more than 25 years and was a past Chairman of the Board. Craig was an active and long standing member of the Downtown Rotary Club of Tulsa and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a life member of the Indian Nations Council Executive Board of the Boy Scouts of America. He was one of the first Air Scouts and had been an Eagle Scout since March 20, 1930. His highest honor was that of receiving the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award in 1997. Craig's long standing Masonic memberships of over 50 years included DeMolay, Pilgrim-Rock Lodge #522, Tulsa Scottish Rite, York Rite and Akdar Shrine. He was also a member of Tulsa Court #47, Royal Order of Jesters. Craig's hobbies involved travel, photography, gardening, orchid growing and faceting. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting in his younger years. Many close friends were the recipients of clocks and bolo ties from his lapidary work and finished gem stones from his faceting work. He was also most generous in sharing his beautiful orchids with his friends and Sunday School Class. Craig and Sue were early members of the Friendly Couples Class at Boston Avenue Church in 1943 and remained faithful members of that class until it disbanded in the year 2000. Craig was a faithful member of his church and served many years ago as Chairman of the Commission on Missions focusing primarily on Bolivia and South America. Craig is survived by his wife of 69 years, Sue. He is also survived by: his son, Jon; daughter-in-law, Linda of Tulsa; and granddaughters, Jennifer of Dallas and Sarah of Tulsa. Other survivors are his first cousin, Blanche VonSeggern of Escondido, CA and nieces, Betty Nelson of Waterville, OH and Ruth Murray of Greenbrook, NJ. Craig was predeceased by Craig Jr. in May, 2003. Visitation will be at Ninde Garden Chapel on Sunday and Monday. Service will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, at the Boston Avenue United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions are requested to be made to the Tulsa Scottish Rite Charitable and Educational Foundation (6355 E. Skelly Dr., Tulsa, OK 74135), the Indian Nations Council of the Boy Scouts of America (3206 S. Peoria, Tulsa, OK 74105) or the Society of Exploration Geophysicists Foundation Museum (P.O. Box 702740, Tulsa, OK 74170-2740). Ninde Funeral Directors, Garden Chapel, 742-5556.
