Joseph Starnes, Jr. (born April 3, 1755) married Rachel Rice on August 16, 1796. Their children:

      a. Eleanor Starnes (born July 23, 1797).

      b. Joseph Starnes III (born November 22, 1798) married Catherine Bowman.

      c. Jesse Starnes (born October 14, 1799) married Nellie Watts.

      d. Harrison Starnes (born December 20, 1801) married Mary Bowman.

      e. Jacob C. Starnes (born February 3, 1803) married Alice Kellar.

      f. Willie Ellen Starnes (born June 20, 1805) married Joseph Bradshaw.

      g. Rachel Starnes (born October 15, 1810, died September 22, 1887) married Simon Bisanar (born March 20, 1806, died January 30, 1877).

      h. Henrietta Starnes (born November 3, 1812) married Wyatt Fowler. . . .

NOTE: The Revolutionary War pension record of Joseph Starnes, Jr. states that at Starnes Defeat in 1779 his "brother-in-law", Michael Moyer, was killed. This means that either Michael Moyer was married to a daughter of Joseph Starnes, or that Joseph Starnes, Jr. was married to the sister of Michael Moyer. If the relationship is the latter, then Joseph Starnes, Jr. was married at least twice. This is not inconceivable since he was 41 years of age when he married Rachel Rice. If he was married earlier, were there children of that marriage? See also . . . Joseph Starnes who married Susannah Ury in 1794 in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. . . .

      b. Jesse Starnes, b. 19 0ct. 1798, m. Nellie Wats, daughter of Thomas and Mary Teague Wats, and had eleven children. . .

      Joseph Starnes
      Birth: 1755
Death: 1840, Burke County, North Carolina, USA

Joseph Starnes was the oldest child of Joseph and Katherine Starns. He was born in southwestern Virginia very near the North Carolina border in 1755. His father, Joseph, Sr., and uncle, Frederick, were heavily involved in land speculation in North Carolina and Kentucky in the 1760s and 1770s. Joseph, Jr. joined them in their trips when he became a young man, and he became very familiar with the geography of what would become western Virginia and North Carolina, and eastern Kentucky and Tennessee. In April, 1779 on what would prove to be their final expedition into Kentucky his father, uncle and brother-in-law were all killed by Indians. He was the only member of the party to escape.

During the Revolutionary War he served as a scout in the western parts of the southern colonies and fought in the Battle of King's Mountain, SC. For his service in the American Revolution he received a pension from the Federal Government.

At the end of the war he moved his widowed mother and his younger siblings to Mecklenburg County, NC. He took on the responsibilities of the head of the household and helped her to rear the children. He did not marry until his siblings were grown.

In August, 1796 he married Rachel Rice, the daughter of Jared and Lettie(?) Rice. They had eight children, Eleanor, Joseph III, Jesse, Jarret Harrison, Sarah, Rachel, Jacob and Myra.

In 1816 he moved his family to their new home near the Catawba River in what was then Burke County, NC and is now Alexander County, NC. They lived on a large tract of land on the Middle Little River which flows into the Catawba. There he farmed and operated a grist mill. He also served as a Justice of the Peace.

When he died circa late 1839 or early 1840 he was buried in the cemetery at the meetinghouse, which later became Bethlehem Baptist Church. His original tombstone disappeared long ago but the approximate location was identified by Wm. Leroy Starnes and others of the Bethlehem community in the 1960s and a replacement stone was dedicated to his memory.

Some of the dates on the monument have since been determined to be incorrect. The year of his birth, 1755, is found in his pension application papers. His marriage bond to Rachel Rice, while dated 16 August, 1796, can not be proved to be the date of the marriage. Although marriages usually occurred within a few days to a few weeks after the bond was issued, one can assume that the marriage occurred in late August, 1796 in Mecklenburg County, NC. His estate papers are dated from 23 April 1840 forward. So circa 1839/1840 is more acceptable for the date of his death.
