MILITARY: Joseph was enrolled in the Liberty Independent Troop from Aug 21, 1800 to Aug 23, 1800 under Lt. Samuel S. Law. "The Liberty Troop, the oldest militia unit in the county and perhaps the oldest cavalry company in the state, was organized in July 1789 as the Second Troop of Horse Militia, Liberty County Battalion, under the command of Captain Simon Fraser. Although the unit was known as the Troop of Horse, Liberty County Battalion (1790), and the Liberty County Blues (1800), in 1807 it was designated the Liberty Independent Troop. It was activated during the War of 1812 and sent to Darien to block a British attack on Savannah from Point Petre. The Liberty Independent Troop was the only coastal horse unit that did not disband after the War of 1812. The troopers continued to hold drills and musters during the antebellum period that commonly featured tilts at the ring and head, competitions that tested both horsemanship and dexterity with the sword. These popular social events attracted large crowds that came to enjoy the pageantry and fellowship, and the picnic that usually followed th e tournaments. Young belles and matrons vied for the title, "Queen of Love and Beauty", sewed banners, baked cakes, and cheered their beaux and favorite contestants." - Author unknown, but featured on the Liberty County, GA GenWeb site, http://www.petersnn.org/libertyco/military.htm.
