John Stockton, born 8 Aug 1701, and his younger brother Thomas Stockton, born 1703, were born in the house now known as "Morven." Their father, Richard "The Builder" Stockton, died in this house in 1709. This house is located at 55 Stockton Street, Princeton, Mercer County, New Jersey.
Morven, the Stockton family home for over 200 years is located in the Stony Brook neighborhood of Princeton in Mercer County, New Jersey. In 1701 this area was part of the 300 square mile Piscataway Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey.
John Stockton, a son of Richard "The Builder" Stockton and Susanna (nee Witham) Stockton, was born in August of 1701 in a house now known as Morven. Built in 1701 by Richard "The Builder" Stockton, Morven, now a museum, is located at 55 Stockton Street, Princeton, Mercer County, New Jersey. In 1730 Richard "The Signer" Stockton, who signed the Declaration of Independence, was born in Morven. In 1758 John Stockton, father of Richard "The Signer" Stockton, died in Morven, the same house where he was born.
John Stockton was born in what is now Princeton, Mercer County, New Jersey, however, in 1701 the town of Princeton did not exist and this area was known as Stony Brook, Piscataway Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey. John Stockton was not born in a town named Piscataway, he was born in the 300 square mile Piscataway Township that included Stony Brook and what is now Princeton. Present Piscataway Township is now just 19 square miles and is located about 16 miles northeast of Princeton.
In August of 1696 Richard "The Builder" Stockton bought 400 acres from Dr. John Gordon. Most of Princeton University, including its oldest building, Nassau Hall, is located on the 400 acres Richard Stockton purchased from Dr. John Gordon.
It appears that all of Richard and Susanna Stockton's children born after August of 1696 were born in what is now Princeton, Mercer County, New Jersey. The Stockton children born after August of 1696, but before Morven was built in 1701, appear to have been born in the house now known as "The Barracks" or as "the Old Stockton House." The Barracks is located at 32 Edgehill Street and is about 1000 feet from Morven at 55 Stockton Street.
The Barracks is thought to have been built before 1696 and appears to be the oldest house in Princeton. It is located on the 400 acres Richard Stockton purchased from Dr. John Gordon in August of 1696.
