    • (1) Michael Caviness <http://www.michaelcaviness.com/>:

It has been brought to my attention that through DNA analysis, my . . . Samuel Pickering, Jr. (below) of Bucks County, Pennsylvania was not the son of Samuel Pickering of Salem, Massachusetts. Therefore, I have removed the generations prior to my . . . Samuel Pickering, Jr. . . .

Samuel Pickering, Jr. . . . born January 20, 1720 (1718?) in Solebury Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania; died 1795 in Frederick County, Virginia; married October 30, 1747 in Bucks County to Grace Stackhouse who was born July 27, 1720 in Richland, Bucks County, Pennsylvania the daughter of Benjamin and Sarah (Gilbert) Stackhouse and died 1783 in Frederick County, Virginia. It might be noted that Mrs. Ruth Marshall Strong, who is responsible for much of this early work on the Pickerings, has data that suggests Samuel Jr. was born 1718 and that Grace died 1777 in Bucks County and that her parents were John and Elizabeth (Pearson) Stackhouse. Samuel and Grace were born in the first Quaker settlement in the state of Pennsylvania. It was just north of Philadelphia across the Delaware River out of New Jersey. The Quakers began the settlement in 1682-84 and built their first church meeting house called New Hope. The area is now Bucks County. Many of their generation of friends and relatives had gone into the valley of the Potomac and Shenandoah River as early as 1732. The French and Indian Wars came in 1757-65 and many of their relatives and friends went into Frederick County, Virginia which was a Quaker settlement begun by Alexander Ross and others by a large land grant from the Governor of Virginia. A United States Government ordinance of 1787 was passed with no slavery north and west of the Ohio River. After 1800, many of these families were pioneering the frontiers of Ohio and Indiana. Samuel Jr. apparently remained in Bucks County for a time after his mother and step-father (Mary Scarborough Pickering and Joseph Lupton) moved to Virginia. Samuel Jr. is believed to have moved to Frederick County, Virginia sometime after the French and Indian War. They attended Hopewell Meeting House. Records of this family are found in Hinshaw's Quaker Records. Samuel Jr. and Grace were the parents of twelve children: . . .

[i] Mary Pickering born October 30, 1748 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania; died Belmont County, Ohio; married August 21, 1768 to Richard Fawcett, II who was born May 7, 1745 in Bucks County, the son of Richard and Rachel (Longacre) Fawcett; died May 29, 1801; Will recorded in Frederick County, Virginia. . . .

[ii] Jacob Pickering born September 4, 1750 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania; married December 21, 1774 at Hopewell Church in Frederick County, Virginia to Hannah Ellis who was born 1750 the daughter of Enos and Elizabeth (Colson) Ellis, and died 1816 in Frederick County, Virginia. . . .

[iii] Benjamin Pickering born July 7, 1752 in Bucks Co, PA; died January 27, 1807 in New Hope, Greene Co, TN; married October 18, 1775 at Hopewell Meeting House, Frederick Co, VA to Rebecca Ellis the daughter of Enos and Elizabeth (Colson) Ellis. . . .
