Clarke Publishing Company, 1897, pp. 124-125: Mr. [Benedict] Laflin was united in marriage, October 24, 1848, with Miss Eliza Ann Phares, daughter of Thomas F. and Martha (Douglass) Phares, the former a native of New Jersey, of Scotch ancestry, born in 1802, and the latter of Pennsylvania, of Irish parentage, born in 1805. In their family were six children - William W., Eliza A., Thomas, Martha R., Susan and Mary M. They came to Illinois in 1839, locating in Mercer county, where the mother died August 17, 1845, at the age of forty years. Mr. Phares again married, his second union being with Mrs. Elizabeth McDuff. By this union were six children: Ruth Applegate, Catherine Beath, Charles, Albert, Carl, Ellen, and two who died in infancy. Thomas F. Phares died at Atlantic, Iowa, January 25, 1890, when almost eighty-eight years old. The paternal grandmother of Mrs. Laflin was named Stewart, and is supposed to be of English descent. She had a brother who was a very rich merchant in the West Indies. Her grandfather Douglass was in the war of 18 12.
