    • (1) According to Starnes, H. Gerald & Starnes, Herman, Of Them That Left a Name Behind - A History of the Starnes Family, Baltimore, MD: Gateway Press, 1983, p. 225, Peter STARNES, Sr. had at least five sons, Henry, Jacob, Frederick, Joseph and Peter, Jr. All of those five sons are listed as heads of households in the 1820 census of Scott County, VA. It appears from the listing of the household of Peter STARNES, Sr. in the 1820 census that he may have had as many as two additional sons, both of whom would have been born between 1810 and 1820. One of these two additional sons might have been Charles Claiborne STARNES, who was born on June 22, 1810, and who later lived near Peter STARNES, Jr. in Coffee [formerly Bedford] County, TN.]
