      (2) Evans, Willis F., History of Berkeley County, West Virginia, 1928, pp. 194-195:

EVANS - There were three men in direct descent in the Evans family by the name of John. The ancestor of the family in this county was John Evans I., who migrated to New Jersey from Wales and settled near Burlington. His son, John Evans II., migrated to the Valley of Virginia about the year 1740, bought land of the VanMetres on Opequon River (Creek). When trouble with the Indians was apparent in 1753, he hastily constructed a stockade fort two miles southeast of where Martinsburg now stands. This came to be known as John Evans Fort and was a refuge for the settlers of that region. He had previously married Polly VanMetre, who was the defender of the fort on several occasions when the men were away. This fort was visited by General Braddock on his way through Berkeley County to the Monongahela campaign in 1755, for from Seaman's Journal, doubtless written by Lieutenant Spendalowe of the detachment of Marines sent by Commodore Kepple of the British fleet, for he says: "May 1st - At 5 we went with our people, and began ferrying the army into Virginia, which we completed by 10 o'clock and marched in our way to one John Evans (Fort) where we arrived at 3 o'clock - 17 miles from Connecocheig, and 20 miles from Winchester. We got some provisions and forage here." The army spent a little time here, for he says further: "On the 2nd: - As it is customary in the army to halt a day after three days' march, we halted today to rest the army." From the union of John Evans and Polly (VanMetre) Evans was born Johns Evans II. The families of Evans and VanMetre married and intermarried in several instances. In one instance, Abraham VanMetre married Isabel Evans. Of this line is descended James M. VanMetre (deceased) and Isaac D. VanMetre of the Arden District. On another occasion John Evans III. married Margaret VanMetre. Of this line descended Tillotson Evans, the youngest of eight sons (no daughters) . Tillotson Evans was a farmer who resided west of Arden in Gerrardstown District. He married Mary Ann Orr. Of this union was born JAMES W. B. EVANS, who was a teacher in the public schools of the county for 43 years. Mr. Evans was a Democrat of the old school. He always cherished a desire to hold public office but lacked the abilities of the politician to succeed in that line. He was a candidate on several occasions: for the West Virginia State Senate in 1896, a candidate for County Superintendent of Schools in 1892, a candidate for Assessor of Madison County, Ohio. President of the Board of Education of Gerardstown District. He held two appointive offices, President of the Board of Education of Gerardstown District under John W. Shirley, County Superintendent, and Deputy Sheriff of Berkeley County under Sheriff H. S. Miller, 1916. Was serving in that capacity when his death occurred on November 30, 1918. The State Tax Commissioner's audit of his books showed not one cent deficit during the three years of his office and the Commissioner verified this by a letter of commendation to Mr. Evans. stating that his books were in the best shape of any in the State.
