According to this source, the portion of the lineage of President James BUCHANAN, Jr. that is more remote than his grandparents (John BUCHANAN and Jane RUSSELL) is largely unproven. (3) Smith, John Guthrie, Strathendrick and Its Inhabitants from Early Times, Glasgow, Scotland: James Maclehose and Sons, 1896, p. 352: JOHN BUCHANAN of Ramelton, married Jane, daughter of Samuel Russell, and had a son James: JAMES BUCHANAN removed to America in 1783, and settled near Mercersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, where he died in 1821. He married Elizabeth Speer, in Adams County, Pennsylvania, and had four sons and a daughter. . . . (4) Browning, Charles H., Americans of Royal Descent, Second Edition, Philadelphia, PA: Porter & Coates, 1891, p. 48: 30. - JOHN BUCHANAN, of Romelton, County Donegal, had: 31. - JAMES BUCHANAN, who removed to America in 1783, and settled near Mercersburg, in Franklin County, Pa., where he d. in 1821, leaving issue by his wife, Elizabeth Speer, whom he m. in Adams County, Pa. (5) According to the above sources, James BUCHANAN removed from Ireland to America in 1783, but none of those sources indicate that James BUCHANAN's father, John BUCHANAN, ever removed from Ireland to America. (6) Acccording to some sources, James BUCHANAN's father, John BUCHANAN, was the same person as the Pvt. John BUCHANAN who was born in 1825 in County Donegal, Ireland; removed from Ireland to America in 1747; returned to Ireland before 1751; married, first, Jane Russell in Ireland in 1751; returned to America before 1765; married, second, Jane ROWAN/ROWEN in America in 1765; served in the York County, PA Militia during the Revolutionary War; and died in York County, PA in 1810. See, e.g., Find a Grave Memorial 80159575; however, the contributor of that Memorial has admitted that she has been unable to substantiate with 100% certainty that the husband of Jane ROWAN/ROWEN was the same person as the John BUCHANAN who returned to Ireland and married Jane RUSSELL.
