    • (1) Zabriskie, George Olin, "Christian Barentsen Van Horn and Some of His Descendants," The American Genealogist, Vol. 44, No. 4 (October 1968), pp. 204-205:

John Barentsen Van Horn, son of Barent Van Horn . . . by his second wife Eva Tietzort, was born at Constables Hook, N.J. On 10 March 1796, John and his father-in-law, Abraham J. Hopper of Harrington Township gave bond to David Baldwin of Harrington (Bergen Co. 5:321):

Whereas John Van Horn has sold unto David Baldwin, tenement house, land and meadow in Township of Bergen now in possession of Cornelius Van Buskirk, assignee of David Baldwin, containing 115 acres of upland and 15 acres of meadow, payment of which has been received. Indemnifies David Baldwin from suits, etc. against premises (Penal sum - 5,000 pounds).

On 6 March 1797, John B. Van Horne of Harrington Township, carpenter, and Elizabeth his wife, sold 77.70 acres of land "between Wearemus and Saddle River, Harrington Township" for 777 pounds (Bergen Deeds J:103). On 8 Sept. 1800, John Van Horn of Franklin Township, carpenter, and Elizabeth his wife, sold 14.49 acres of land on the west side of Saddle River in Franklin Township, being part of farm formerly of Albert Ackerman, for $362.25 (Bergen Deeds M:87), and another dated the same day for 31.89 acres for $1,145.32 (M:87). A similar deed dated 27 Oct. 1800 was for 31 acres, more or less, for $1,500 (M:92). These transactions have been cited to prove that John Van Horn of Harrington and later of Franklin Township, was the same John who lived previously in the Jersey City area. In Franklin Township John lived on a farm on Ramapo Valley Road, in Mahwah, which apparently had belonged to the Hopper family, perhaps to his father-in-law, Abraham J. Hopper. On Erskine's Revolutionary War map of the area, it was labelled "Van Alen." Miss Bailey gave an account of it in her Pre-Revolutionary Houses, p. 313 and pl. 102.

John married Elizabeth Hopper, daughter of Abraham J. Hopper and Charity Zabriskie [Zabriskie #204], born 10 Aug. 1778, baptized 6 Sept. 1778 at Bergenfield, died 11 May 1856, aged 77/0/1, and was buried in the Ramapo Reformed Churchyard in Mahwah, N.J. Her father in his will dated 30 May 1820 and proved 24 June 1820 mentioned Abraham, Barent, Cornelius and Charity, children of daughter Elizabeth. On 7 April 1823 Charity Hopper, widow of Abraham Hopper, dec'd, of Franklin Township, released her dower under promise of "$60 annually for life to be paid by Abraham Rutan, Garret S. Hopper, John G. Hopper, Abraham Van Horn, Barney Van Horn, Cornelius Van Horn and Jacob J. Hopper, heirs of Abraham Hopper dec'd" (Bergen TT 573). On the same day Garret S. Hopper and wife Maria signed a release for $1,562.50 (TT 565). On 2 April 1823 Abraham Van Horn and wife Margaret, Cornelius Van Horn and wife Phebe, Barney [Bernard in signature] Van Horn, and Jacob Hopper and wife Charity, sold property to John G. Hopper for $700 (TT 566). The same day Abraham Rutan and his wife Levina sold property to John G. Hopper for $955 HIT 567). These probate records clearly outline who were the children of John B. Van Horn.
