Vere H. Stiver
BOURBON - Vere H. Stiver, 86, of Sunset Drive, Bourbon, died at 2:08 a.m. April 30, 2008, in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was in failing health.
He was born June 10, 1921, in Warsaw, to Roy and Eva Nine Stiver. On March 21, 1946, he married Phyllis Cline, who survives.
Living in Bourbon since 1946, he retired as a machinist at Biomet Inc., Warsaw, and was a 1941 Atwood High School graduate.
A faithful member of First United Church of Christ, Bourbon, he was president of the consistory, taught the youth group along with many other tasks and maintenance around the church. He was a member of Bourbon (Plymouth) Masonic Lodge, where he served as a past master. He served as "Rainbow Pop" for the Rainbow organization of the Masonic Lodge. He was a member of Bourbon American Legion Post 424 and Bourbon Lions Club, where he served as chaplin.
He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, serving during the Korean Warsaw [sic] from 1941-47, and 1950-52.
He loved serving others in the community. He worked several years with the Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home, where he was able to share his compassion with others. He spent many hours in the local coffee shop sharing stories with others on a daily basis.
Also surviving are two sons, Paul (and spouse Brenda) Stiver, Argos, and Steve (and spouse Cindi) Stiver, Warsaw; a grandson, Christopher; two step-grandchildren; and a sister, Maxine Laughlin, Warsaw. He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First United Church of Christ, Bourbon, with the Rev. Linda Hewitt officiating. Burial will be in Bremen Cemetery with military honors.
Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home, 115 S. Main St., Bourbon, with a Masonic Lodge service at 7 p.m.

The family of Vere wishes to thank the community for the outpouring support and concern shown to them throughout his illness. There were many people from the community who transported him to and from his dialysis appointments, doctor's appointments or that helped in many different ways.
