Compiler really did not get to know Mary Alice GILCHRIST until after 1965; Mary was nearer to the age of compiler's older siblings. Compiler and Mary's younger sister were considered "the little kids" when the two families had the opportunity to visit each other.

Mary completed her elementary, junior high and high school years in South Bend public schools. She then attended Franklin College, Indiana University and University of Colorado, majoring in language and education areas. After teaching in public schools for a few years, Mary earned her Ph.D. in Education, and began teaching for I.U. at I.U.-P.U. in Indianapolis. By the time compiler moved away from Indianapolis in June, 1989, Mary was Dean of Academic Affairs at the School of Education there.

Mary has had a very interesting career and personal life. She owns her home in Indianapolis and spends much of her time gardening. She has traveled to interesting places, e.g. Alaska; through the Panama Canal, etc. She has studied extensively and done research, writing and program design in the areas of early childhood education, language education and the use of computers in teaching.

During her busy career, Mary also managed to carry a great amount of the responsibility for helping her aging parents. Frequent trips back and forth between Indianapolis and Argos consumed many of her weekends and vacations. She has arranged medical, optical and dental appointments for them in Indianapolis, and provided them with transportation and lodging as needed. In 1995 it became prudent to find living arrangements that would offer her elderly parents assisted living while maintaining their privacy and independence to the extent possible. At that time, Mary and Janet helped them to arrange their move to the American Village in Indianapolis, where they could have private living quarters along with amenities such as meals and medical assistance as needed. Their two-bedroom apartment is only minutes from Mary's home, and even in her own retirement, she continues to watch out for her parents' needs.

The seminar, sponsored by the Bell System Laboratories, brings together non-science university professors and Bell System scientists to discuss the impact of technology on people.

The two day meeting featured visits to the Bell Research Laboratory at Murray Hill, New Jersey, case studies and group discussions. Professor Marvin Bressler, head of the sociology department, Princeton University, served as moderator.

Skeeter is my bachelor cat with the ginger tail.

JOBS: After graduating from Franklin College I worked for Ball Band until that was enough of that. I taught at Lincoln in South Bend and then had my first real college teaching job at IUSB. In 1970 I was sent to Indianapolis to IUPUI when it became a four year program and was there until retirement. It was a good ride. Not everyone gets to help invent a university.

WHAT WAS GOING ON IN THE 50'S? I was at Ball Band for four years. A degree in economics for a female in the 50's was a bit ahead of time. I, then, took a year off to get a teacher's license at the University of Colorado after which I returned to South Bend and taught at Lincoln for nine years. During that time I did my master's at CU in the summer time.

ANYTHING IN THE 60'S? I completed a doctorate in education at Colorado in 1967/8 after spending a year in residency there. That was when I went to IUSB where I stayed until 1970 when I came to IUPUI. My first trip to Europe was in 1969 for a month and now I wonder how I afforded it! It was an experience and a half.

AND NOW? I retired in 1994, as soon as I could since the school business "ain't what it used to be!" I love retirement! I don't know how I had time to work. I've been able to take a trip to Alaska and one through the Panama Canal. Last fall I took a great trip to eastern Europe. My mother died suddenly in January of this year and my father is still living in the retirement home here at age 94. Their care has taken quite a bit of my time.

WHEN I'M ALONE I LIKE TO . . . read or watch TV. I don't have Internet or e-mail yet.

MY FAVORITE PIGOUT FOOD IS . . . probably pizza with everything but anchovies, and I've never met a carbohydrate I didn't like.

THE BEST MOVIE I EVER SAW . . . was ''Rear Window," at least it is probably one of my all time top ten.

MY FAVORITE READING IS . . . mysteries, often British, biographies.

I LIKE TO SPEND TIME . . . reading, doing yard work, and watching TV. I own a set of golf clubs and two bicycles. I go to the symphony, Pops, water aerobics, and Civic Theater on a regular basis. I did a Bible study class this year and do some volunteer work.

AND NOW CAN YOU BELIEVE 50 YEARS? I remember when my mother had her 50th high school reunion and how old I thought those folks were! I seem to think of myself as I was about 20 years ago, but my knees and mirror tell me that is 'virtual reality.'
