George Son of George Boone was baptized the Nineteenth of March 1666. . . . "GEORGE BOONE III. (son of George and Sarah Boone) was born at Stoak (a Village near the City of Exeter) in A.D. 1666, being a Weaver; his Wife's Maiden Name was Mary Maugridge, who was born in Bradninch (eight Miles from the City of Exeter) in the Year 1669, being a Daughter of John Maugridge & Mary his Wife whose maiden Name was Milton. ["]They (the said George & Mary Boone) had nine Children that lived to be Men and Women: namely, George, Sarah, Squire, Mary, John, Joseph, Benjamin, James & Samuel, having each of them several Children, excepting John who was never married. (A daughter named Mary died in infancy, so they named a later daughter Mary also.) The said George and Mary Boone with their Family, came from the Town of Bradninch in Devonshire, Old-England (which is a Town at 8 miles Distance from the City of Exeter, and 177 measured Miles Westward from London); they left Bradninch the 17 Aug. 1717, and went to Bristol where they took Shipping, and arrived at Philadelphia in 1717 September 29, Old-Stile, or October 10th New-Stile; three of their Children, to wit, George, Sarah & Squire they sent in a few Years before. From Philadelphia they went to Abington, and staid a few Months there; thence to North-Wales and liv'd about 2 Years there; thence to Oley in the same County of Philadelphia, where Sarah (being married) had moved to some Time before. This last Place of their Residence (since the Divisions made in the Township of Oley & County of Philadelphia) is called the Township of Exeter in the County of Berks: It was called Exeter, because they came from a Place near the City of Exeter. And, "He the said George Boone the Third, died on the Sixth Day of the Week, near 8 o'clock in the Morning, on the 27th of July 1744, aged 78 Years; and Mary his Wife died on the 2d Day of the Week, on the 2d of February 1740-1; aged 72 years; and were decently interred in Friends Burying-Ground, in the said Township of Exeter. When he died, he left 8 children, 52 Grand-Children, and 10 Great-Grand-Children, Living; in all 70, being as many Persons as the House of Jacob which came into Egypt." The Boone Society has the marriage record of George III & Mary Maugridge (note different spelling of "Moggridge" on original old English hand-written document below) performed at St. Disen 's Church in Bradninch: Document owned by the Boone Society: George Boone married unto Mary Moggridge the 16th day of August 1689 The Boone Society also has the baptism record of Mary Moggridge from St. Disen's Church as follows: Document owned by the Boone Society: 1668 Mary ye daughter of John Moggridge baptized ye 23rd day of December. . . . The Boone Society has copies of actual baptisms at St. Disen's Church in Bradninch, Devonshire, England, for 6 of the children of George Boone III and wife Mary. (Note: the Old James Boone Genealogy gives us the actual birth dates.) George III & Mary actually had 10 children, which include two daughters named Mary, (the first died in infancy). The children are numbered (1) through (10) below: Document owned by the Boone Society: (1.) 1690 George ye son of George Boone baptized the 20th day of July (George IV) From James Boone Genealogy: "GEORGE BOONE IV. (the eldest Son of George & Mary Boone) was born in the Town of Bradninch aforesaid, on the 13th of July 1690 about ½ H. past 5 in the Afternoon; and died in Exeter Township aforesaid, on the 20 November 1753; in the 64th Year of his Age. He taught School for several Years near Philadelphia; was a good Mathematician, and taught the Several Branches of English Learning; and was a Magistrate for several Years. His wife's maiden name was Deborah Howell. She died in 1759 January 26." They married 27 July 1713 in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. Page 590 of Hazel Spraker, "The Boone Family" showing minutes of the Abington Monthly Meeting of Quakers: 5 mo 27, 1713 (27 July 1713-old style calendar first month was March): Whereas George Boone and Deborah Howell, the daughter of William Howell, having declared their marriage intentions before two Mo. Meetings, Enquiry being made by persons Appointed and found Clear from all others on ye account of marriage, Did accomplish their Marriage in ye United of Friends as is signified by their Marriage Certificate." Document owned by the Boone Society: (2.) 1692 Sarah ye daughter of George Boone baptized the 28th day of March From James Boone Genealogy: "SARAH BOONE (Daughter of George & Mary Boone) was born on the Fifth Day of the Week, about ½ H. past 11 in the Forenoon, on the 18th of February 1691-2." Sarah married Jacob Stover 15 March 1715 in Pennsylvania, Hazel Spraker, The Boone Family p. 23. "No known children of Sarah Boone & Jacob Stover," explains Spraker, "Sarah married Jacob Stover 15 Mar 1715, as recorded in Christ Church, Philadelphia . . . possible that she died quite young, and her descendants, if any, are unknown. While she was the first in the family to settle in in the Oley township, she evidently did not affiliate with the Friends Meeting there, as no data concerning her appears in Quaker records. She was no doubt absorbed by the German element into which she married. . . . In 1738 a wife Margaret (Stover) signed a deed for land sold by Jacob to another person, so Margaret was probably a second wife." (Some researchers believe there were children of this marriage, or at least of Stover's second marriage. Proof sources here would be welcomed.) Document owned by the Boone Society: (3.) 1694 Mary ye daughter of George Bone baptized the 26th day of September 1696 Mary ye daughter of George Boone buried 20 May 1696 Document owned by the Boone Society: (4.) 1696 Squire ye son of George Boone baptized December ye 25th From James Boone Genealogy: "SQUIRE BOONE (son of George & Mary Boone) was born on the Fourth Day of the Week, between 11 & 12 in the Forenoon, on the 25 November 1696." Squire married Sarah Morgan 23 July 1720 at the Gwynedd Meeting of Quakers, Berks Co, Pennsylvania. Squire died 2 January 1765 and Sarah died 1777; both buried at Mocksville, North Carolina. Document owned by the Boone Society: (5.) 1699 Mary ye daughter of George Boone baptized the same day (previous entry Oct 13, 1699). (Note: This Mary was the second daughter of George & Mary Boone named Mary, not an uncommon practice when the first one died. . .). From James Boone Genealogy: "MARY BOONE (daughter of George & Mary Boone) was born Sept. 23, A.D. 1699: She was the Wife of John Webb, and departed this Life the 16th of January 1774, in the 75th year of her Age; her Husband died in the same Year, October 18th, in the 80th Year of his Age." Mary married John Webb 13 Sept 1720 in Philadelphia Co, Pennsylvania Document owned by the Boone Society: (6.) 1701 John ye son of George Boone baptized January ye 30th He was a school teacher and it was he who preserved the family births and deaths and passed it on to his nephew James (son of James & Mary) who wrote the Old James Boone Genealogy, and quoted here: Continuing with Old James Boone Genealogy: "JOHN BOONE, Senior (Note: called "Senior" by James Boone, because James also had a son named John, called John, Junior.) John Boone Senior, (the third Son of George & Mary Boone) was born in the Town of Bradninch, in Devonshire in Old-England on the Seventh Day of the Week, about 10 or 11 o'clock in the Forenoon, on the 3 January 1701-2, Old-Stile, or A. D. 1702 January 14, New Stile. And he departed this Life on the 10th Day of October 1785, on the Second Day of the Week, Sixteen Minutes after Midnight, in the 84th Year of his Age (being the oldest of our Name & Family, that we have heard of ); and was decently interred in Friends Burial Ground at Exeter the next Day. He (with his Parents, etc.) left Great-Britain in the 16th Year of his Age, and lived exactly 68 years here (in North-America) from the Day he landed at Philadelphia. He lived only 5 Weeks and 4 Days after the Decease of his Brother James. N.B. All of our Relations of the Name of Boone, who were living after 1785 October 10, are American born, as far as we know." (Hazel Spraker in her book, "Our Boone Family," indicated John Boone never married.) Sometime after 1701, but before 1717 when George III moved to America, the George Boone III family joined the Quakers at Cullompton, just outside of Exeter, (Devon, England) and thus baptism records for their remaining 4 children were not recorded. Their remaining 4 children were: Joseph, Benjamin, James & Samuel and their birth and death information is shown as recorded by James Boone. All were born in England. Continuing from James Boone Genealogy: (7) "JOSEPH BOONE (son of George & Mary Boone) was born between 4 & 5 in the Afternoon, on the 5th of April 1704; and he departed this Life on the 30 January 1776, in the 72d Year of his Age (Berks Co, PA). His Wife Catherine died on the 31st of January 1778, and was interred at Exeter (Berks Co., PA) the next Day exactly 2 Years after the Burial of her Husband." Hazel Spraker, in her book, The Boone Family quotes from early Exeter (PA) Records: "8-30-1733, Joseph Boone produced a paper of condemnation for proceeding in marriage contrary to order." Neither Spraker nor the Old James Boone Genealogy give a last name for wife Catherine, but Sarah Ridge Rockenfield in her book, Our Boone Families, Daniel Boone's Kinfolks, USA Boones, gives name of wife of Joseph Boone, son of George Boone III & Mary Maugridge, as Catherine Warren. If this is true, it's interesting that both Joseph Boone Sr. and Joseph Jr. had a wife with the same maiden name of Warren. Hazel Spraker lists no known children for this couple. The Boone Society has determined, however, that Joseph Boone Sr. and his wife Catherine had at least 3 sons (see Generation 5 for info on their children). Some researchers believe this couple had other children and any proof documents of other children would be welcomed. Continuing from James Boone Genealogy: (8) Benjamin Boone (Son of George and Mary Boone) was born the 16th of July 1706 and he died on the 14th of October, 1762, in the 57th Year of his Age. Susanna Boone (his Widow) died on the 5th of November, 1784, in the 76th Year of her Age. Benjamin married twice, first to Ann Farmer 31 October 1726 at Abington, Pennsylvania (marriage is recorded in the Abington Meeting of Quakers); and married 2nd in about 1736 to Susanna Likens/Lycon. In Benjamin's will he mentions, "Susanna, my dearly beloved wife". The will is signed 5 January 1762, proved 27 October 1762, recorded Berks County, Pennsylvania. The Boone Society has determined Susanna's last name was Likens/Lycon. As proof of Susanna's last name, we refer to a May 12-13, 1733 land transaction when Andrew Lycon and his wife Anne sold 200 acres at Manatawny, Pennsylvania, to Benjamin Boone of Oley Township, Pennsylvania (Berks County Deeds Book 1, pp. 68-69). We also cite Dr Peter Stebbins Craig, F.A.S. G., who has written the definitive work on "The 1693 Census of the Swedes on the Delaware" which was published in 1993 by Studies in Swedish American Genealogy of Winter Park, Florida. On page 36 of this heavily documented volume, Craig proves the surname of Susanna LIKENS (also spelled LYKINS/LYCAN, etc.), the 2nd wife of Benjamin Boone, uncle of the frontiersman Daniel Boone. Susanna LIKEN Boone's parents, Andrew LIKEN (Anders LYCON) "and his wife Anne sold 200 acres at Manatawny (now Amity Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, acquired in 1721 from Mans Jonasson (Ander's brother-in-law), to Benjamin Boone of Oley Township . . . Berks County". Page 41, Spraker's The Boone Family: "When and where Benjamin married the second wife Susanna (surname unknown) has not been learned. It is probable that he married the second time out of the Quaker fold, possibly about 1736. At this time he was in disfavor at Gwynedd Meeting." The minutes give this item: "February 27, 1736, Benjamin Boone has not been spoken to since last Meeting". (9) "JAMES BOONE, Senr, (the Sixth Son of George & Mary Boone) was born in the Town of Bradninch, in Devonshire, in Old-England about 1/2 Hour past 2 in the Morning, on the 7th of July (Old-Stile) or the 18th of July (New-Stile), Anno Domini 1709. And in 1735 May 15 (O. S.) he married Mary Foulke by whom he had fourteen Children, and Nine of them lived to be Men & Women, namely, Anne, Mary, Martha, James, John, Judah, Joshua, Rachel, & Moses. The Said James Boone, Senior, & Mary his Wife lived together 20 Years 8 Months & 25 Days; and She departed this life on the 6th Day of the Week, at 20 Minutes past one o'Clock in the Afternoon, on the 20th Day of February 1756, aged 41 years & 11 Weeks, and was decently interred in Friends Burying-Ground at Exeter on the First Day of the next Week. And in 1757, October 20, he married Anne Griffith, being just 20 Months after the Decease of his former Wife. And here, for the Satisfaction of the Curious, I shall insert a few Chronological Remarks, viz.- ["]The said Mary Boone deceased in 1756 Feb. 20, at 20 Minutes past one in the Afternoon, which wanted but two Minutes & Sixteen Seconds of 20 o'Clock according to the Italian Manner of Reckoning (for the Italians, Jews, & some others, always begin their Day at Sun-Set); which was the 20th of the Zenith Month ADAR, when the Moon was 20 Days old, and 4 Weeks before the Vernal Equinox. ["]The said James Boone, Senior, married Anne Griffith in 1757 October 10, at 20 Minutes past one in the Afternoon; that is, he was married to his Second (or last) Wife exactly 20 Months after the Decease of his first, and 4 Weeks after the Autumnal Equinox." "JAMES BOONE, Senior, departed this Life on the 1st Day of September, A. D. 1785, on the Fifth Day of the Week, at ten Minutes after nine o'Clock at Night, in the 77th Year of his Age; and was decently interred in Friends Burying-Ground at Exeter on the Seventh Day of the Same Week. He (with his Parents, etc.) left Great-Britain in the 9th Year of his Age, and lived Almost 68 Years in Pennsylvania. N.B. When he was born, it was between 9 & 10 at Night here in Pennsylvania (allowing for the Difference of Longitude); and he died between 9 & 10 at Night." "Mary Foulke (Daughter of Hugh & Anne Foulke) was born at North-Wales in Philadelphia County, A. D. 1714 December 5 (N.S.)-James Boone, Senior, & Mary Foulke were married, A. D. 1735 May 26, (N.S.) and lived together 20 years, 8 months and 25 Days. She departed this Life, A. D. 1756 Feb. 20 at 20 Minutes past one in the Afternoon, in the 42nd Year of her Age." (10) SAMUEL BOONE, per Spraker, p. 24, "Samuel b. about 1711." Per Old James Boone Genealogy: Samuel Boone (the youngest Son of George & Mary Boone) departed this Life on the 6th of August 1745, and was buried at Exeter (PA) the next Day, aged about 34 Years." Spraker, p. 49: Samuel married Elizabeth Cassel 29 October 1734 in Pennsylvania.
