      Barnard Hale . . . is a son of Gardner and Jane (Waters) Hale. The father was born at Providence, R. I., Aug. 30, 1795, of English ancestry, and the mother was a native of South Carolina. Gardner Hale, in his younger days, was a seaman, but went to Indiana, where he was married and engaged in farming until his removal to Iowa. His death occurred Jan. 12, 1888; his wife preceded him to her final rest about twenty years.
