      Samuel, a goldsmith at Salem, was born Mar. 23, 1658, and married May 26, 1687, Mary Emerson of Gloucester, dau. of Rev. John Emerson and granddau. of Dep. Gov. Samuel Symonds of Ipswich. His wife died in Oct. 1703, and he married (2) April 27, 1704, Sarah (Pickman) Mayfield. He died Oct. 13, 1722, aet 65.

      i. Patience, died soon.

      ii. Samuel, Rev., of Andover, b. Feb. 17, 1690; grad. H. C. 1708; ordained at Andover Oct. 17, 1711, and pastor there until his death June 5, 1771, in 60th year of his ministry. He had numerous publications and preached the election sermon in 1750. He was "punctilious in distributing among the poor a full tenth of his income, of which he kept account." He married in Jan. 1712, Hannah White (John Esq.) of Haverhill who died in 1773. He made his calls on horseback "with madam on a pillion behind him." A contemporary gave in 1856 the following account, "In passing from the parsonage to the meeting house for divine worship on the sabbath, flanked by his black body-servant on the left, and by madam and her servant and the children on the right, his movements were precise and stately, as became his ideal of the ministerial office and when he entered the sanctuary, it was in meet reverence for the man of God, as well as in compliance with the old custom of the day, that the whole congregation rose and stood before him until he had seated himself in the pulpit." Beside two daughters, he had 3 sons, Samuel, John and William, all of whom acquired wealth that they devoted unselfishly to philanthropic and educational purposes.

      iv. Mary, b. Aug. 5, 1694; d. Oct. 5, 1785, in 92nd year; m. Capt. George Abbot of Andover in 1721; 7 children.

      v. Ruth, b. Sept. 4, 1696; m. in 1718 Samuel White of Haverhill.

      vi. Elizabeth, b. Mar. 5, 1699; d. Aug. 7, 1700.

      vii. John, Hon. Col., b. June 22, 1701; a deacon of Brattle St. Church; Colonel of the Boston Regiment, Justice of the Peace and member of the Quorum; also deputy of Boston for several years. He was much devoted to works of benevelence", and for some time was a dealer in English goods and had "a considerable trade as a publishing bookseller and binder." He m. Nov. 21, 1723, Mary Buttolph who d. Aug. 15, 1742, and he m. (2) Abigail Webb of Fairfield, Conn. He d. Apr. 19 1768, and was buried with military honors. He had 7 children.
