    • (1) Robert R. Johns' pedigree, http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com:

William Johns, oldest son of Jesse Johns and brother of Thomas Johns, had preceded him to Rhea County, TN, where he first appeared in the tax rolls in 1820, Capt. Bradley's Company.

      (2) Broyles, Bettye J., History of Rhea County, Tennessee, Collegedale, TN: College Press, 1991:

      FREE AND ACCEPTED MASONS

Although there probably were other organizations during the early days of Rhea County, the oldest one of record is the Masonic Order. A total of six Masonic Lodges have been recorded in Rhea County: three in the Town of Washington (Luminary, Aurora, and Washington), one at Sulphur Springs (later moved to Spring City), one at Dayton, and one at Graysville. Information of these lodges was obtained from John R. Stracener, Grand Secretary of Free and Accepted Masons of Tennessee, Nashville, and several miscellaneous sources.

      LUMINARY LODGE NO. 42

Luminary Lodge No. 42 was chartered at Washington on 3 October 1821. The charter members are unknown, but the following men were officers in 1825: John Rice, W.M.; James Berry, S.W.; Thomas Kelly, J.W.; Wyley H. Chapman, Treasurer; Jacob Brown, Secretary; John Clack, J.D.; James B. Cobbs, S.D.; and John Parker, Tyler.

Members in 1825 were: James C. Mitchell, Miller Francis, Jesse Poe, John Holland, Samuel Holland, John Robinson, Thomas Eaves, John B. Hood, James G. Williams, Elijah Rice (initiated, 3 December 1824; passed, 16 December 1824; raised, 30 December 1824), and George W. Mayo (initiated, June 1825; passed, August 1825; raised, 22 September 1825).

Initiates included Thomas Price, John Atkinson, Henry Johns, William Johns, John Greenwood, and Major Beavers. Other notes indicated that none were expelled or rejected during 1825,and that the total number of members was 25. John Rice and Elijah Rice both contributed $1.00 to the monument to be erected at Mount Vernon. William Locke withdrew from the Lodge in July 1825.

On 2 September, the Lodge ordered "that Brother Daniel Rawlings be appointed to represent this Lodge by proxy at the most Grand Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of Tennessee."

An article by H.A. Crawford in the Dayton Herald of 17 March 1930, included a section on the Masonic Lodge. Unfortunately, the first four lines were almost obliterated by a large tear in the paper. The article begins with "Washington . . . 1821 . . . was issued to Isaac Holland." The remainder of the article contains the same list of names recorded above.

Luminary Lodge No. 45 was arrested on 4 October 1827.

      (3) A household headed by William JOHNS is listed in the 1840 census of Meigs County, TN at p. 230.

Age ranges in the household headed by William JOHNS were as follows: 2 free white males under 5 years of age [probably William's sons, Marion J. and William R. JOHNS]; 3 free white males between 15 and 20 years of age [probably William's sons, James, John and Thomas JOHNS]; 1 free white male between 20 and 30 years of age [probably William's son, Jesse Jay JOHNS]; 1 free white male between 50 and 60 years of age [probably William JOHNS]; 2 free white females under 5 years of age [probably William's daughters, Caroline and Narcissus]; 1 free white female between 5 and 10 years of age [probably William's daughter, Mary JOHNS]; 2 free white females between 10 and 15 years of age [probaly William's daughter, Elizabeth Ann, and another daughter of William who probably married before 1850]; and 1 free white female between 40 and 50 years of age [possibly William's wife, Nancy].

It is possible that William JOHNS' wife, Nancy, may have been William's second or subsequent spouse, because, according to the 1840 census, William's spouse was born between 1780 and 1790; however, according to the 1850 census, Nancy was born in about 1803. Of course, there is also the possibility that the age of William's spouse was listed incorrectly in the 1840 or 1850 census.
