      JOHANNES SEBRING 1673/4-1744 & .AELTJE LEFFERTSE 1676-17__

JOHANNES SEBRING born c 1673/4 in Flatbush, Long Island; died after 1744; (son of Jan Roelofse Sebring 1631-1703 & Adrianna (Polhemius); grandson of Roelof Lukassen Sebring born c 1595 Beyle, Drenthe, The Netherlands; and grandson of The Rev. Johannes Theodorus Polhemius born 1598 in Rhenish Bavaria, who died 1676 in Flatbush (Midwout) Long Island).

The last record found for Johannes in the Reformed Dutch Church, Raritan, New Jersey, was 18 Aug 1744, when he was a sponsor for the baptism of Grietie, daughter of Galyen Ackerman & Rachel. Johannes left no will of record, and probably died soon after this date; as he was then past severity years old.

Joannes Snebring appeared in the Flatbush census taken about 1698 [Meyers' compilation, page 38]. Johannes' first son, Johannes, was baptized in Flatbush in 1700. Soon after, Johannes removed to the Raritan Valley of New Jersey and lived there until after 1711, when he returned to New York City. He was a member of the NYC RDC until 1718. Two of his children were baptized there. He then returned to the Raritan and lived on the north side of the river in the Bound Brook area until his death. His sons later owned considerable land, and no doubt part of his original holdings. His name appeared in the Raritan Church records (Somerville, NJ) as a sponsor for many baptisms. The Dutch custom of sponsorship in their churches shows the close association of related families.

Johannes Sebring married, about the year 1699,

AELTJE LEFFERTSE baptised 2 Jun 1676 (daughter of Leffert Pieterse & Abigail (Auksen)).

The Lefferts genealogy lists this Aeltje as dying single. No record of her marriage has been found, but the following proves she was Johannes Sebring's wife:

      (1) Johannes' father (Jan Roelofse Sebring) was appointed one of the guardians of Leffert and Pieter Pieterse (sons of Pieter Jans Pieterse & Femmetje (Hermans)) when their mother wished to remarry [Flatbush Rec., Liber B:108].

      (2) Johannes' & Aeltje's son Johannes Sebring was baptized 10 Aug 1700, Flatbush. Sponsors were Roelof Sebring and Abigail Pieterse (Aeltje's mother).

      (3) Johannes & Aeltje named their third child "Leffert", baptized 28 Aug 1705.

      (4) Johannes Sebring & wife Aeltje witnessed baptism 30 Apr 1702 at Raritan, of Barber, child of Auke Jansen & wife [Barbara (Provoost)]. Auke Jansen is identified as son of Jan Aukerse, brother of Abigail (Auksen) Pieterse [Aeltje's mother].

Proof has not been found for Bergen's statements that Johannes Sebring carried on a bakery in Brooklyn in 1715-16-17, and that he married, second, Rachel Bona Hibon. However, in the family Bible record kept by Johannes' son Cornelius B. Sebring 1766-1802 (and continued by the latter's son Edward) is the entry "In the Year of Lord 1686 was Borne my Grandmother Rachel Sebring Departed this Life 26th December 1783 in the morning" [per Carol Sebring (Bassett) Smith].

Sebring children: [Baptismal dates are from Reformed Dutch Church records]

[1] Johannes bp 10 Aug 1700 Flatbush, Long Island; married Aeltje ?.

[2] Abigail baptismal record not found; order in family uncertain.

[3] Aer Jaentian bp 23 Mar 1703 Raritan RDC, sponsors: Jan Roelofse Sebring & wife.

[4] Leffert bp 28 Aug 1705 Raritan, bp as "Lefkers"; married Jannetje De Groot.

[5] Adrianna c 1707? baptismal record not found; order in family uncertain. Adrianna married, 1728, Tunis Teunisson born 1690 (s/o Cornelis Teunisson & Neeltje (Bogart), a descendant of Teunis Gysbertsen Bogaert, of Brooklyn [per Cornelius V. R. Bogert, III]. Tunis died in 1757. His will, dated 23 Oct 1757, probated 22 Dec 1757, names his wife and children. . . .

[6] Annetje bp 28 Apr 1708 Raritan, sponsors: Jacob Sebring & Maria (Van Neste).

      [7] Geertruy bp 4 Mar 1711 NYC RDC; d 1743; md 1733 Cornelius Van Ranst 1691-1741.

[Note by compiler: In "First Reformed Church, Raritan (Somerville) Baptisms," Somerset County Historical Quarterly, Vol. II, pp. 138-145 (1913), the following baptismal entry appears:

      1712. . . .

      Aug. 6 . . .

Sebrege, Johannes and wife [child's name omitted]. (The SEBRING surname was frequently spelled in that way in the baptismal records.)

If this information is correct, then Johannes and his wife may have had one more child than is listed in the Sebring Collections.]

John Cletus Sebring made an extensive study of the Raritan Church records. Some of his notes and conclusions are as follows: Abigail Sebring & Daniel Korpor witnessed baptism of Elias, 7-26-1719, child of Lyas Van Court & wife, Enni (Anna). . . Hans (Johannes) Sebering & wife, Aeltje, witnessed baptism of Aeltje, 12-17-1721, child of Willem Oolen & wife Abigail. . . . Hans (Johannes) Sebering & wife Aeltje witnessed baptism of Jannetje, 7-8-1722, child of Alias Van Court & wife Anna. . . .

[Note by compiler: According to Jeanette S. French , Enni (Anna), mentioned in the immediately preceding paragraph, may have been Adrianna SEBRING, and she may have married, first, Lyas VAN COURT, and, second, Tunis TEUNISSON. If this is so, then both Adrianna SEBRING would probably have been born before 1700, and Johannes SEBRING, Sr. and Aeltje LEFFERTSE would probably have been married several years before the 1699 marriage date given in the Sebring Collections.]

The logical conclusion of the aforesaid facts, and in accordance with Dutch patronymics, is that Abigail Sebring who sponsored Elias Van Court in 1719 was the daughter of Johannes Sebring, and was named for her maternal grandmother, Abigail, wife of Leffert Pieterse.

It is also logical to assume that Adrianna Sebring who married Tunis Teunisson in 1728 was also a daughter of this Johannes, and most likely born about 1707, and named for her paternal grandmother Adrianna (Polhemius) Sebring. (John had tentatively placed her as a daughter of Lucas Sebring.)
