      456. THOMAS STRUTH of HARTEST, 17 Aug. 1447

      Dated Thurs. after the feast of St Laurence the martyr 1447; to be buried in the parish churchyard of Hartest; to tAlicehe high altar of the same church 3s 4d; to the Friars Preachers of Thetford, to celebrate a trental for my soul and for the souls of my benefactors, 10s.

      To Alice my wife, for term of her life, all my tenement called 'Hervyis', except a piece of land called 'Smythys', that is, provided she remain unmarried, she to provide a half-part of the straw and clay (luti aucem 'cley'), for the repairing of the buildings (domos) there whenever they need repair during her time, and she to pay for it, to my execs, 10s in money, annually.

      After the death of Alice the tenement to remain to Thomas Coppyng, the son of John Coppyng of Hartest, and his heirs for ever, if he be of good behaviour and of honest conversation; otherwise, the tenement to be sold by my execs and a third part of the proceeds to be distributed among the sons and daughters of the said John Coppyng of Hartest; if Thomas have the tenement on these conditions, he to pay my execs half the value of the tenement, taking the value as being that for which it could be sold to others; if Thomas Coppyng die without heirs, the tenement to remain to my execs to sell and dispose for my soul and the souls of my benefactors.

      'To the makyng of the Rode loft' [sic, in English] in the church of Hartest all the debt that Robert Wellys of Hartest owes me for some years back, by estimation, 13s 4d and more.

      Residue of all my goods to the hands of my execs: John Bole of Hartest and John Frost of the same.
